Women's Hoops Downed By Lenoir-Rhyne, 67-48
BREVARD, N.C.- The Brevard College women’s basketball game saw sophomore Shelby Wolfe provide a 10-point effort, but it wasn't enough while BC dropped a South Atlantic Conference bout to Lenoir Rhyne, 67-48, Wednesday evening in Boshamer Gym in Brevard, N.C.
The Tornados (2-4, 1-3 SAC) saw their two-game win streak snapped while being hampered by shooting woes throughout the game while they shot 34% from the floor. The Bears (5-2, 2-2 SAC) snapped a two-game losing skid and defeated BC for the 12th consecutive time dating back to 2008.
“I thought we hung in there with a very good basketball team,” said head coach Shannon Reid. “Lenoir-Rhyne is a very disciplined team and made it very tough for us to find driving room tonight.”
BC’s Hadara Bannister scored the Tornados first five points while the game saw its lone tie at 7-7 with 14:31 in the first half.
The Bears defense clamped down and went on a 15-4 run over the next 7:05 of play. L-R’s Jenni Gust chipped in six of her game-high 19 points during the stretch while the Tornados committed four of their 18 turnovers and shot 2-of-9 during the spurt.
A Krystal Patton layup stretched the L-R lead to 14, 30-16, with 3:02 remaining in the first half, but the Tornados responded with a 5-0 run after knocking down 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Patton struck again with a deep three-pointer to make it a 12-point lead at the half, 33-21.
Lenoir-Rhyne shot 44.4% in the first half with a perfect performance (8-of-8) from the charity stripe. BC struggled offensively and went 1-for-8 from long range.
Freshman Chelsea Turner nailed a three coming out of the break and a bucket from Wolfe cut the Bear lead to seven, 33-26.
However, L-R suffocated the Tornado offense and held them to no points over the next six plus minutes during a 23-11 run.
BC would trail by as many as 22 (63-41) following a Jazmine Charles three. Tornado sophomore Kadijah Watts registered her first points of the season with a three-pointer with 33 seconds remaining in the second half.
The Bears dominated the boards by holding a 40-23 advantage. However, the BC defense played a pesky 40 minutes by forcing 22 turnovers.
Wolfe paced the Tornado squad with 10 points while Madison Lenox led the team with three rebounds. Turner impressed defensively with three steals.
Gust (19), Charles (15) and Patton (12) recorded double figures for the Bears while Charles paced both teams with eight boards. L-R shot 52.9% from the floor
