RALEIGH, N.C. –Qadhafi Turner recorded 20 points and Cannon Lamb added 17 points, but it was not enough as the Brevard College Tornados Men's Basketball team (3-4, 0-1 USAS) dropped its USA South opener to William Peace (4-3, 2-0 USAS).
William Peace was led offensively by two 20-point scorers. Trey Bryant scored a game-high 24 points on an efficient 9-of-13 shooting while grabbing an impressive 20 rebounds for a double-double. Tyson Sellers added 21 points off of the bench for the Pacers, shooting 7-of-16 from the field which included 4-of-9 from distance.
Junior forward Levi Lamb added 13 points, including 6-of-7 from the free throw line to the Tornados' efforts on Saturday afternoon.
Brevard's defense forced 13 turnovers in the contest, recording eight steals in the ballgame.
The biggest difference in the game was William Peace's 50-27 rebounding advantage, which included 20 offensive boards. WPU's bench outscored Brevard's 37-12 to propel the Pacers to victory.
William Peace kept a first-half lead for most of the period, but the Tornados would not be deterred, keeping the game tight. A Demari Hopper layup at the 6:44 mark in the first half gave Brevard its first lead of the afternoon, 24-23.
WPU regained the lead before an L. Lamb free throw gave Brevard the lead back, 31-30. The Pacers ended the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 38-31 lead into the intermission.
The Tornados hung around early in the second period, closing WPU's lead to 44-42 with 16:02 left after a Ke'vel Kingsberry jump shot. The Pacers started to pull away, however, using a 13-3 run to push its lead to 68-53 with 6:40 remaining. William Peace took its largest lead of the contest when a Tyson Sellers 3-pointer with 4:47 left in regulation gave the Pacers a commanding 73-57 lead.
Brevard will have six days off before their next contest, as Averett University visits Boshamer Gymnasium for a USA South contest on Friday, December 7 at 7:30 p.m.
