BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Tornados Men's Basketball team (3-4, 0-1 USAS) return home on Friday to square off with the Averett University Cougars (0-6) at the Boshamer Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The Tornados return home after dropping an 82-68 road decision to the William Peace Pacers in their USA South Conference opener. Junior guard Qadhafi Turner led Brevard's efforts last Saturday, turning in a season-high 20 points propelled by an efficient 6-of-8 shooting from behind the arch. The Pacers were led by newly-named USA South Conference Player of the Week Trey Bryant, who recorded 23 points and 20 rebounds in the contest.
Turner looks to continue his strong start to the 2018-19 season on Friday. The native of Wilmington, N.C. has averaged 10.4 points through the Tornados' first seven contests, which ranks second-most on the team. Turner's 16 steals (2.3 spg) are tops on the team, and individually rank him tied for third in the conference.
Sophomore guard Demari Hopper has also contributed heavily for the Tornados on the defensive end. Alongside shooting 60% from the field (sixth in the USA South), Hopper currently averages 1.9 steals per game, which place him 10th in the league.
Sophomore forward Cannon Lamb also enjoyed a solid performance for the Tornados in their last outing. Lamb put up 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including a season-high two 3-point shots. Lamb currently averages 7.9 points and a team-high 4.3 rebounds on the young season.
The Averett Cougars come into Friday's contest led by freshman guard Isaiah Jones. A native of Wake Forest, N.C., Jones has averaged 8.3 points and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds per contest.
Brevard as a team ranks fourth in the league in steals, averaging 9.6 steals per contest. The Tornados remain one of the league's most efficient shooting teams, ranking fourth in both field goal percentage (46.2%) and 3-point percentage (35.1%).
After Friday's contest, the Tornados enjoy a nine-day break before embarking on a season-long five game road trip. Brevard will travel to LaGrange, Ga. for a USA South battle with the LaGrange College Panthers (4-3, 1-1 USAS) on Sunday, December 16 at 3 p.m.
