BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados Women's Basketball team (6-3, 2-2 USAS) will host the defending USA South Conference champion Piedmont Lions (7-3, 2-0 USAS) in a key conference matchup on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
Brevard comes into play on Saturday after a two-game back-to-back road swing last weekend. The Tornados defeated the Scotties of Agnes Scott 52-41 before suffering a 73-55 setback to the Huntingdon Hawks.
Piedmont has started out 2018-19 conference play with wins in each of its first two games, defeating both Wesleyan College and Covenant College. The Lions will look to repeat their success from a season ago, as they secured a 23-6 overall record, including 11-3 in conference play, and earned the USA South's automatic bid into the NCAA DIII Tournament.
For the Tornados, freshman center Avery Lockwood has continued an impressive start to her collegiate career. The Foxworth, Miss. native is currently averaging nine rebounds per contest, which ranks her sixth overall in the USA South. Lockwood's efforts have led the Tornados to a team rebounding rank of third in the conference (44 rpg).
As a team, Head Coach Donald Hudson's team has made strides in ball control, as the Tornados rank first in the league in fewest turnovers committed per game (14.8).
After Brevard's contest with Piedmont, the Tornados face two NCAA DI opponents in exhibition action next week before the holidays. Brevard heads to Spartanburg, S.C. to face USC Upstate on Tuesday, December 18 at 6 p.m. before squaring off with Wofford on Wednesday, December 19 at 2 p.m. The Tornados will then have 12 days off before a New Year's Eve matchup with St. Andrews University on December 31 at 2 p.m.
