DEMOREST, Ga. - The Brevard College volleyball team (1-24, 1-11 USAS) fell in a mid-week USA South Conference match against the Piedmont College Lions (9-17, 5-7 USAS) on Wednesday evening at The Cave Arena in Demorest, Georgia.

Mariana Rodriguez's 20 digs led a Brevard defense that accumulated 60 total digs. Rodriguez added to her digs-per-set total, as the sophomore from Houston has averaged 5.36 digs-per-set in 2019, a mark that is third in the USA South.

Two other Tornados tallied double-digit dig totals alongside Rodriguez, as freshmen Breanna O'Shields (11 digs) and Grace Pukas (10 digs) added to Brevard's defensive effort.

O'Shields led BC's attack with five kills, while Pukas dished out nine assists. Fellow freshman Julie McGahy served up two service aces as well.

Brevard's early 2-0 lead in the first set was quickly overtaken by the Lions. However, trailing 15-8, the Tornados made a charge, cutting the deficit to two points at 15-13. However, the Lions used a 10-4 scoring run to take set one, 25-17.

The Tornados took a 6-3 lead to begin the second set before Piedmont took the lead, 7-6. After keeping the set within striking distance, Brevard eventually fell by a score of 25-15, giving Piedmont a 2-0 advantage in the match. The Lions took the third set by an identical, 25-15 score to clinch the straight-set sweep, 3-0, over the Tornados.

Brevard will close out the 2019 season on Saturday, November 2 when the Tornados face off in a USA South quad-match in Decatur, Georgia. BC plays Agnes Scott College at 10 a.m. before closing the season against Covenant College at 2 p.m.
