CARY, N.C. – The Brevard College women's soccer team (12-4-2, 5-2-2 USAS) clinched home field advantage for the first round of the USA South Conference Championship Tournament with a resounding 4-1 win over William Peace (8-6-3, 4-3-2 USAS) in the regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon in Cary, North Carolina.
With the win, the Tornados clinched the third seed in the conference tournament and will host sixth-seeded Meredith at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Ives-Lemel Family Field on the campus of Brevard College.
In Saturday's crucial game to determine seeding, Brevard opened the scoring with a goal by senior
Grace Black after just three minutes of action assisted by
Kiara Porcelli. The goal by Black was her team-leading ninth of the 2023 season.
William Peace found an equalizer in the 17th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The match then remained in a deadlock for the next 18 minutes.
In the 35th minute, sophomore goalkeeper
Nicole Arroyo was tasked with taking a free kick in WPU territory. The native of Yulee, Florida promptly found the back of the net to give BC a 2-1 lead. The eventual game-winner was the second goal of the season for Arroyo and the third of the season by BC goalkeepers with freshman goalie
Abby Nunez also scoring this season.
Brevard maintained its one-goal advantage into halftime and through the first 11 minutes of the second half. Freshman
Austin Huffman then scored her fifth goal of the season to stretch the lead to 3-1 in the 57th minute off an assist from
Tae Brown. Black iced the victory in the final minute of the game assisted by freshman
Rachael Trifoli.
The BC defense blanked the Pacers offense through the second half, not allowing a goal and permitting just two shots in the stanza.
In total Brevard outshot William Peace 22-8, while also holding a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Brevard will now turn its attention to the USA South Conference Tournament as the Tornados will host the first round vs Meredith, 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Ives-Lemel Family Field. The Tornados have been spectacular at home this season, going 8-0-1 with just one goal allowed at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
