Late Drama Sends Tornados Back to the Title Game

Rocco Barbon's Last-Minute Winner Lifts Tornados Past Monarchs in Semifinal

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Junior defender-turned-forward Rocco Barbon willed the Brevard College men's soccer team (7-8-3) to victory in the semifinals of the USA South Conference Tournament, scoring a go-ahead goal on a header in the 74th minute before striking the Tornados to the Championship in the final minute of the game. Brevard finished the match off with a 4-2 win over top-seeded Methodist University (10-4-2), as the Tornados return to the title game for the second-consecutive season.

Barbon, a native of Treviso, Italy, scored twice to lead all Tornados in the match. Sam O'Callaghan, a graduate student from Wicklow, Ireland, scored Brevard's first goal of the game to originally tie things up at 1-1, while senior forward Ryan Lynch assisted on Barbon's match winner. Caue dos Santos added a last-second goal to ice things off. BC goalkeeper Matheus Rossi made a pair of saves.

With the win, Brevard was able to exact some revenge from earlier in the season, as Methodist scored a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes to defeat the Tornados on Senior Day, 2-1, and in turn clinch the conference regular season title and top-seed in the tournament.

Methodist's Steven Floyd and Christopher Shoffler scored a pair of unassisted goals for the Monarchs, who fall in the semis after coming in as the number-one overall seed.

The Monarchs opened the scoring in the third minute of play, after Steven Floyd beat Rossi to a loose ball and scored an empty net goal. Methodist kept the Tornados off the board through the first stanza, and took the one-goal lead into the intermission.

O'Callaghan, dribbling through the defense in the attacking midfield for Brevard, scored BC's first goal in the 60th minute, ripping a right-footed shot into the left-corner of the goal.

Barbon gave Brevard its first lead of the match in the 74th minute with a header delivered by Lynch's cross, as the Tornados held a one-goal edge with 16 minutes left to play.

However, the hosts were not done yet, as a set piece just outside the BC penalty box allowed the Monarchs to rip a free-kick goal into the back of the net, as the game was now level at 2-2 with four minutes to play.

Barbon hit the match-winner with just 24 seconds remaining when he dribbled through the attacking portion of the field, made a move, settled, and fired a strike into the top-left corner and a raucous celebration erupted from the BC sidelines.

With the match in hand in the waning seconds, dos Santos scored on an empty netter from midfield to put the contest on ice, giving Brevard a 4-2 semifinal triumph.

The Tornados will head to Rocky Mount, North Carolina with a chance to repeat as USA South Conference Champions, while also having the opportunity to win their third trophy in the last four seasons, as Brevard takes on two-seed North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday at 3 p.m.
