BUENA VISTA, Va. - A record-breaking, historic campaign for the 2023 Brevard College women's soccer team (13-5-3) concluded on Saturday evening, as the Tornados concluded their USA South Conference Tournament run with a 3-1 defeat to regular season champion and number-one overall seed Southern Virginia University (13-5-1).
Brevard's historic season included the program's single-season NCAA-era record for wins (13), the first unbeaten season in program NCAA history (8-0-2), and the first time that any BC women's soccer team has advanced out of the first round of a conference tournament and also the program's first NCAA-era postseason win.
Brevard and Southern Virginia played to a 0-0 draw through the first half of play, before SVU's Ellie Owen scored on a Makinna Winterton assist to break the stalemate. However, the Tornados had an answer, as on Brevard's first shot of the game
Taylor Richardson scored on an assist from
Tae Brown at the 60-minute mark, tying the contest up.
Neither side found the back of the net for the next 12 minutes before Winterton scored on an assist from Claire Stephens on a corner kick. SVU took a controlling 3-1 lead when Maybel Harris found the back of the net in the 75
th minute, and the Knights wrapped up the victory to take the championship trophy.
Southern Virginia outshot the Tornados 22-1, with Brevard managing to shut out the Knights in the first half of play. Starting goalkeeper
Nicole Arroyo made seven saves for Brevard.
