BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - The Brevard College men's tennis team completed a successsful Fall Break trip to Maryland and Pennsylvania, competing in four total matches to open the team portion of the 2024-25 schedule.
The Tornados' 4-0 start marks its best start to a season in NCAA history, as Brevard begins a campaign unbeaten through four matches for the first time.
Brevard was dominant on its trip up north, kicking off the trip with 6-1 wins over Washington and Jefferson on Monday as well as a 6-1 triumph at McDaniel on Tuesday. BC then swept Penn State Altoona 7-0 on Wednesday before concluding the week with a 6-1 victory at Geneva on Friday, capping off the highly-successful week for BC men's tennis.
BREVARD 6, WASHINGTON AND JEFFERSON 1
The week began for Brevard on Monday in Washington, Pennsylvania as the Tornados matched up with W&J at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center. Number-one doubles duo of
Bryce Bernitt and
Ayden Montero handled Jackson Akers and Alex Duing 6-1. Meanwhile,
Hayden LeBlanc and
Noah Boyles teamed up in the number-two spot to defeat Buck Kubic and Connor Simms, 6-1, clinching the doubles point for the Nados. This year in NCAA DIII, tennis is on a seven-point match scale, with doubles counting as one point.
Brevard then moved on to singles where the Tornados took five out of six matches to wrap the 6-1 victory up. LeBlanc, Bernitt, Montero, Boyles, and
Ethan McGee all earned singles wins to propel the Tornados to a season-opening W.
BREVARD 6, MCDANIEL 1
BC then traveled to Westminster, Maryland to take on the McDaniel Green Terror on Tuesday at the Warfield Tennis Courts. This time around, BC swept doubles competition as duos of Burnett/Montero,
Caelan Byrd/McGee, and
Nathan Bookout/
Brian Seon all took wins in doubles action.
LeBlanc took his second number-one singles victory of the trip over Connor Neal, 6-3, 6-1, while Bernitt earned a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Jake Kegley at the number-two spot. Montero dominated Drew Ryder 6-1, 6-0 in number-three singles while Boyles collected a 6-2, 6-4 win in the number-four spot. Bookout rounded out the singles wins for the Tornados, 6-1, 6-0, as Brevard clinched its second win of the trip 6-1.
BREVARD 7, PENN STATE ALTOONA 0
BC next made the trip to Altoona, Pennsylvania for its third match of the trip, a dominant 7-0 victory over Penn State Altoona.
Teams of Bernitt/Montero, LeBlanc/Boyles, and Byrd/McGee all earned doubles wins, while the Tornados swept singles play for the first time on the trip.
LeBlanc, Bernitt, and Montero all won numbers one-three singles in straight sets, while McGee took a 6-3, 6-1 victory in number-six singles. Byrd earned a thrilling three-set win in the number four spot, coming from behind after a first-set loss to defeat Jackson Newell 6-3 in the second set and 10-6 in the tiebreaker. Boyles won in three sets as well, overcoming a close second-set loss to win a 10-6 tiebreaker, as BC finished off its sweep.
BREVARD 6, GENEVA 1
BC concluded its Fall Break trip in Beaver Falls in a Tornado battle as the Brevard College Tornados took on the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes at the Blackhawk Courts. BC fell in number-one doubles for the first time on the young season, but LeBlanc/Boules and McGee/Seon picked up the point with victories in number two and three doubles action.
BC fell in top-flight singles play as Bernitt lost a tight match to Braiden Smalley, however the Tornados earned wins the rest of the way as Montero, Boyles, Byrd, McGee, and Bookout cleaned up numbers two-six singles and wrapped the trip up with a 6-1 team win.
Brevard's Fall season concludes with a home scrimmage against Truett McConnell University on Tuesday, October 29 at the McCoy Tennis Complex.
