CHAMPIONS!!! Free-Kick Goals Clinch First USA South Regular Season Title for BC Women’s Soccer

Tornados Secure Regular Season Title, Top Overall Seed in 2024 USA South Women's Soccer Tournament

BREVARD, N.C. – The greatest season in Brevard College women's soccer's NCAA history will feature some hardware as the Tornados (13-0-2, 7-0-1 USA South) clinched the program's first-ever USA South Conference Regular Season Championship with a 2-0 victory over Southern Virginia University (6-8-3, 5-2-1 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
 
The title is the first regular-season championship for Brevard College since joining both the USA South and the NCAA ranks. It is the first conference regular season title since BC was a member of the NAIA ranks and took home the 2005 Appalachian Athletic Conference Volleyball regular season title – making Saturday's accomplishment Brevard's first regular season championship in 19 years.
 
Brevard is unbeaten through 15 contests for the first time in program NCAA-era history, and the Tornados have secured nine consecutive wins for the first time in the NCAA era.
 
The Tornados used two second-half goals on free kicks to secure the championship, as Kiara Porcelli nailed a 56th-minute free kick from 20 yards away before goalkeeper Abby Nunez rifled a spot kick from around 35-yards away at the 68-minute mark that helped put the contest away.
 
Nunez, a sophomore keeper from Homestead, Florida, scored her second collegiate goal with the free-kick effort and notched her fifth solo shutout of the season, registering five saves to keep another clean sheet for the Tornados. BC has shut opponents out in 10 of 15 matches this season.
 
Porcelli, a junior midfielder from Merrimack, New Hampshire, got the Tornados on the board first with a free-kick banger from around 20 yards out, scoring her eighth goal of the 2024 campaign.
 
Brevard's defense was stifling throughout the match, particularly following BC's first goal as the Tornado D denied Southern Virginia the answer that it sought before Nunez doubled the lead with 22 minutes left to play. Brevard kept the Knights out of the back of the net for the remainder of the match to seal the deal.
 
Brevard put forth a dominant effort throughout Saturday's affair, tripling SVU's shot attempts 24-8 with an 11-5 margin in shots-on-goal. BC fought for six corner kicks as well compared to SVU's three.
 
Mikayla Rubin, Nunez, and Mikayla Zvekan all led the charge for the Tornado offense with five shots apiece, as Nunez' five efforts at goal all came by way of free kicks.
 
Prior to Saturday's championship-sealing match, the Tornados honored its four seniors – Emma Barnes, Hailey Brien, Hayley Kenney, and Rachael Trifoli. In a touching moment at kickoff, Barnes took the starting lineup and kicked the game off before being subbed out, marking her first contest played since 2022 due to injury.
 
The Tornados will focus on completing the program's first unbeaten season in the NCAA era, and the first overall for Brevard since the NJCAA days in 1998, as BC travels to Misenheimer, North Carolina on Wednesday, October 30 for a 5 p.m. kickoff against Pfeiffer.
