BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's soccer team (15-0-2) clinched the first NCAA-era postseason home win in program history with a 3-0 victory over eight-seed William Peace University (5-8-2) on Saturday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
The Tornados were able to secure their first home playoff win of the NCAA era behind 90 minutes of stifling defense and clutch finishes offensively.
The Tornados scored in the fourth minute as
Kinlee Mozley tapped in a rebound off a shot by
Mikayla Zvekan and held a 1-0 lead for over 70 minutes before Zvekan returned the favor with a goal of her own in the 76
th minute of play. In the final minute of action,
Austin Huffman drew a foul in the box and took her own penalty shot, connecting to extend Brevard's margin to 3-0.
Abby Nunez (8-0-2) got the start in goal for the Tornados, making four crucial saves en route to her sixth solo shutout of the 2024 season. The Homestead, Florida native also matched a seaon-high by taking five shot attempts total.
Nunez' five shot attempts were second only to Zvekan's eight, as the Tornados racked up 21 shot attempts to William Peace's six. BC also held a sizeable 14-4 edge in shots-on-target while also holding a 10-2 corner kick advantage. WPU's Gaby Vasquez made 11 saves in the match.
Mikayla Rubin started a Tornado scoring chance in the fourth minute, playing a through ball to Zvekan. The Draper, Utah native fired a shot that was slowed but not stopped by Vasquez, and Mozley tapped the rebound in as Brevard took the early lead on its home turf.
Brevard fired a total of 11 shots off in the first half, but the Pacers kept the Tornados out of the back of the net as the first half drew to a close with the Tornados on top by a goal.
Zvekan broke through in the 76
th minute, gathering the ball from the Pacer defense and looping a shot that tipped off Vasquez' outstretched hands and crossed the line, doubling Brevard's lead. With less than a minute left to play, Huffman drew a foul in the Pacer penalty box and connected on her PK attempt, sealing the deal for the Tornados as Brevard advances through to the semifinals.
The Tornados, who are the top overall seed, will prepare to host the semifinals next Wednesday, November 6 at 6:30 p.m. against number-four Southern Virginia in a rematch of a hotly-contested regular season contest that ended 2-0 in favor of Brevard.
