Tornados Take Game Three

BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College (15-18, 4-11 USAS) salvaged a game in a three-game set with Southern Virginia (11-21, 7-7 USAS), falling in game one of the Saturday doubleheader before outdueling the Knights in a 14-13 slugfest in game two at Gil Coan Field.

The win snaps Brevard's ten-game losing streak and helps the Tornados in their battle to make the postseason.

GAME ONE: Southern Virginia 14, Brevard 6

The Knights got the bats going after the Tornados starter Jonathan Germany got the first two outs. Zack Geertsen and Mason Jones ripped back-to-back extra-base hits to start the scoring before Ben Agnew added an RBI single, giving Southern Virginia a 2-0 lead after one.

Both sides remained scoreless until the third inning, when the Knights added on with Geertsen's second RBI knock of the game, extending the lead to three runs after three innings.

The Knights once again added on in the fourth, tallying a string of three-consecutive hits to add a pair of runs to the board. Connor Robley capped off the inning with an RBI single before Brevard went to the bullpen, bringing in Kalen Milstead for the final out of the fourth.

Southern Virginia's Jeffrey Hill continued to cruise through the fourth, keeping the 6-0 lead intact. However, Brevard chipped away in the fifth after a Tyson Hinkle leadoff double, as Adam Newcomb ripped a two-out RBI single to make it 6-1 after five innings.

The Tornados added on in the sixth, as Gavin Grant cashed in two on a two-RBI single, forcing Southern Virginia to make its first call to the bullpen. Carson Bybee took over following 92 pitches from Jeffrey Hill, retiring the final two Tornados to end the inning and keep the tally at 6-3.

The Knights immediately answered, as Ben Agnew ripped back-to-back singles to make it 7-3, and the Tornados called on Jacob Wilde to relieve Milstead. SVU would add two more in the frame, growing the lead to a game-high seven runs.

Gavin Grant would get the Tornados back on the board in the eighth after reaching on an error, but four runs in the top of the ninth all but put an end to the contest. The Tornados got a pair in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the sizable deficit.

Jonathan Germany was dealt the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits, striking out two in 3.2 innings. Kalen Milstead was stellar in 2.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Jacob Wilde, Jaeger Pankowski, and Cole Smith combined for the final 2.2 innings of work. Offensively, the Tornados were led by multi-hit efforts from Tyson Hinkle and Adam Newcomb.

Jeffrey Hill earned the win, allowing three runs on ten hits over 5.1 innings. Carson Bybee delivered for the Knights as the lone reliever in the contest, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Offensively, Zach Geertsen tallied a team-high five hits with three RBI, while Seth Lloyd, Conner Robley, and Ben Agnew tallied three hits apiece.

GAME TWO: Brevard 14, Southern Virginia 13

After a scoreless first for both sides, Southern Virginia jumped on top first on a Garrett Stauffer sacrifice fly, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead in the first. The lead wouldn't last long after Brevard loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, as Tyson Hinkle ripped a bases-clearing three-RBI single to give the Tornados their first lead of the day at 3-1.

The Knights wasted no time finding an answer, as Mason Jones crushed a two-out three-run home run go up by a run. Two walks that followed ended Matthew Evans' day on the mound. Jonah Campbell entered with runners on first and second, and Ryan Farris put a cap on the inning with a three-RBI triple, coming in to score on the play on a fielding error, making it 7-3 Knights.

The seesaw affair continued, as Davis Anders sliced the deficit in half with a two-RBI triple before Andrew Bernard stepped in, launching his first career home run, a no-doubt two-run blast to draw the two sides even at seven apiece after three.

Campbell settled in nicely on the mound, retiring the Knights in order in the fourth. Brevard got back to work offensively in the fourth, as the Tornados quickly loaded the bases against SVU's Javari Christopher. Hunter Busque gave BC the lead back with a bases-loaded walk, before Davis Anders scored one on an RBI single and Andrew Bernard tallied a sacrifice fly, growing Brevard's lead to 10-7 after four innings.

Campbell dealt another scoreless frame in the fifth. Nico Bartolotti added another to the Tornados' lead on an RBI single, followed by a Gavin McCoy sacrifice bunt and a Davis Anders RBI single, scoring another on a Knights' error, growing the lead to 14-7 after five innings.

Tyler Bales cut into the deficit with an RBI single in the sixth, before a sac fly and a Tornado error helped the Knights cut it to a four-run game.

The Tornados were held scoreless in the bottom half of the sixth, allowing the Knights to further tighten the hatches in the seventh. Tyler Bales scored another on a single, and Conner Robley made it a two-run game on a fielder's choice.

Both teams were held scoreless till the top of the ninth. Marcelino Leonardo Jr. gave SVU life with a two-out solo shot, but Brevard held on to outlast Southern Virginia, 14-13.

Matthew Evans started the game on the mound, allowing six runs on three hits, walking four and striking out three in 2.2 innings. Freshman Jonah Campbell earned his first career win in a season-high 3.2 innings of relief, allowing four runs on six hits. Aaron Burchett earned his first save of 2026, dealing 2.2 innings of one-run ball to help slam the door on the Knights. Davis Anders led the way offensively with four hits and four RBI, while Tyson Hinkle and Andrew Bernard collected three RBI apiece, with Bernard launching his first career home run.

Benjamin Jackson worked through three innings as SVU's starter, allowing seven runs on five hits. Javari Christopher was dealt the loss, allowing three runs on three hits. Tad Peterson and Ben Agnew combined for the final four innings. Offensively, Mason Jones and Ryan Farris collected three RBI apiece.
