BREVARD, N.C. - For the first time in program history, Brevard Men's Soccer team (7-8-2, 3-7 SAC) defeated the Eagles of Carson-Newman University (7-8, 3-6 SAC) 2-1 in overtime Saturday night.
The Tornados' seniors stepped up big tonight after being honored before the game. Senior Camilo Sosa (Medellin, Columbia) would put the Tornados on the board first as he received a cross from fellow senior Ryan McPhillips (Glasgow, Scotland) to score on a header in the 27th minute of the game.
Carson Newman would tie things up before halftime as Evan Harr would score into an open goal as the Tornados' goalie came out to defend, leaving the net open.
Heath Turner (Kansas City, Mo.) prevented Brevard from giving up a goal in the 79th minute, as he made a crucial save on a penalty kick by Marius Staalby. Turner's save kept the score tied, as the final minutes of regulation ran out. The Tornados' goalie would go on to finish the day with six saves.
As the first overtime period was ending, Gabriel Garcia (Vinhedo, Brazil) would take a free kick to send the ball across the pitch to senior Alec Goettl (Concord, N.C.) who would score the winning goal on a header.
Offensively, the Eagles out-shot Brevard 22-13. The Tornados were led by Camilo Sosa, who finished the day with four shots. Fellow seniors, Ryan McPhillips, Shawn Schoenfeld (Fleming Island, Fla.), and Alec Goettle would end the day with a pair of shots. Junior Gabriel Garcia would add three shot attempts to the tally as well.
