Tornados hang on for 84-78 decision over Warren Wilson

BREVARD, N.C. - Junior guard Stevie Williams (High Point, N.C.) poured in a team-high 20 points as the Brevard College Tornados (1-5) held off a late Warren Wilson Owls ( 4-6) run for its first win of the 2016-17 season.

Williams would finish the evening 4-8 from the field and an impressive 11-12 from the free throw line, as the junior's effort aided late in the Tornados victory. In addition to Williams' offensive outburst, Brevard finished the contest with four other players with double-digit point totals, as junior guard Shelby Parris (Burlingston, N.J.) finished with a career-high 15 points on 5-9 shooting from the floor.

Additionally, the Tornados benefitted from a career night from senior forward Harry Singh (Hanover Park, Ill.) as he collected a game-high 12 rebounds, dished out six assists and finished with three steals in the effort.

The Owls were led offensively by the play of Michael Pomeroy who finished with a game-high 25 points on 8-18 shooting for the game.

Following a 5-0 Tornados run to open the contest, Margues Sullivan put the Owls on the board with a three-point basket, before tying the game at 9-9 on a three-pointer by Pomeroy.

Brevard would than use a 13-6 to open a 22-16 lead over Warren Wilson, aided by six points from Williams, and a three-point basket by freshman JaMarquis Johnson (Minneola, Fla.).

The Owls, however, would benefit from a 13-7 run of their own to tie the game at 29-29 with just over three minutes remaining in the opening half.

Warren Wilson would take its first lead of the game following a Jaquann Lockhart layup. But after four free throws from Parris and a jump shot, along with a free throw from Singh, Brevard would retake the lead at 36-31.

Parris would add a three-point basket with 36 seconds remaining in the half to increase Brevard's lead to eight just before the break. The Tornados would take a 39-33 lead into the half.

Coming out of the 15-minute intermission, the Tornados would capitalize on clutch shooting from Williams and junior guard Evan Dunham (Marietta, Ga.) to increase its lead to 10 points at 49-39.

Brevard would lead by as many as 15 points heading into the 12-minute media break, before the Owls would go on a run, narrowing the Tornados' lead to four points at 60-56 with seven minutes remaining in regulation.

Warren Wilson tied the contest at 64-64 with just over five minutes remaining, before junior guard D.J. Bostick (Marietta, Ga.) would make his impact felt on the game, drilling a clutch three-pointer followed by a layup on a Tornados missed shot attempt. Brevard headed into the final media timeout break with a 69-66 lead.

With the game on the line in the final two minutes, Williams would step to the line for the Tornados on three separate occasions, converting on 6-6 attempts, while Bostick added another three-point basket, and senior Omar El Diraoui (Beirut, Lebanon) added a layup and two free throws to help Brevard hang on for the 84-78 decision.

Brevard is scheduled to return back to the South Atlantic Conference this coming Saturday, Dec. 3 in Hickory, N.C. to battle with the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears with tip-off set for 4 p.m.
