Women’s Soccer Holds Off Pfeiffer at Home, 1-0

Zvekan's First-Half Goal, Shutout Performance Keep Brevard Unbeaten at Home

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's soccer team (7-3-2, 3-1-2 USA South) remained unbeaten at home in 2023, as the Tornados defeated Pfeiffer University (1-11-1, 0-5 USAS) 1-0 on Wednesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

The win improved BC's home record to 4-0-1 on the season, as the Tornados secured a critical three points in the USA South standings. The Tornados have now won consecutive matches over Pfeiffer for the first time ever.

Sophomore forward Mikayla Zvekan scored the lone goal on an assist from BC's leading 2023 goal-scorer Grace Black in the 27nd minute of action, and the Tornado defense featuring the starting back-line of Hailey Brien, Olivia Grisewood, Abbie Worsencroft, and Autumn Wright – as well as Channing Barker as a substitute – and starting goalkeeper Nicole Arroyo kept the Falcons scoreless throughout the match. Arroyo made a total of six saves in the shutout effort.

The shutout marked the seventh shutout of the season for the Tornados, as Arroyo improved her record to 6-2-1 as a starter this year and totaled her fifth shutout (three solo, two combined).

The shot total was tight, despite Brevard's 11-4 shot advantage in the first period. The Falcons were able to narrow the margin with a 6-3 shot total in the second half of play, as the Tornados held a 14-10 match edge in shots (10-6 shots-on-goal). Pfeiffer made nine saves to BC's six, and the Falcons took five corner kicks to Brevard's four.

BC was able to keep its clean sheet intact in spite of serious scoring chances created by the Falcons in the second half.

The Tornados hit the road for a showdown between two sides near the top of the table as Brevard heads to Fayetteville, North Carolina on Saturday to take on Methodist University at 2 p.m.
