Sweet BC Victory on Senior Day

Tornados Honor Seniors, Shut Out Fighting Squirrels in Dominant Fashion

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's soccer team (10-4-2, 4-2-2 USAS) defeated USA Conference foe Mary Baldwin (3-10-2, 2-4-1 USAS) 3-0 on Saturday for Senior Day at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Nine Brevard College seniors - Channing Barker, Grace Black, Tae Brown, Chantal Camenzind, Lena Hatter, Abby Mayer, Taylor Richardson, Abbie Worsencroft and Autumn Wright - were honored in a pre-game ceremony and all part of the match's starting lineup.

With the win, the Tornados remained undefeated at home, improving their record to 7-0-1 when playing at Ives-Lemel Family Field.  In the eight home matches, BC has outscored its opponents by a whopping 20-1 margin. The performance also marked the 10th shutout of the season for Brevard.

Senior Tae Brown, sophomore Mikayla Zvekan and goalkeeper Nicole Arroyo each scored for the Tornados to ensure the victory.  Arroyo earned her seventh win and sixth shutout in goal this season.

The match started with a special moment on Senior Day as Richardson started the game and handled  the kickoff in the opening circle despite being in a boot due to injury.  In an act of sportsmanship, the Mary Baldwin team promptly played the ball out-of-bounds to allow for Richardson to substitute out for sophomore Kiara Porcelli.  An emotional moment ensued with Richardson surrounded by her teammates as the large crowd at Ives-Lemel Family Field applauded en masse.

A scoreless opening 43 minutes of the contest followed despite several strong chances for the Tornados.  With 1:52 remaining in the first half, Arroyo went 70 yards out of her goal to set up for a free kick from the left side just outside of the penalty box.  After an "assist" from senior Barker who helped with lacing up Arroyo's right shoe, the sophomore from Yulee, Florida perfectly placed a direct kick past the outstretched arms of the MBU goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

The goal, which came on the third shot of the year for Arroyo, marked the second of the season by a BC goalkeeper.  Freshman Abby Nunez scored a goal on a free kick earlier this year and celebrated Saturday with her goalkeeping teammate as soon as halftime began with BC leading 1-0.

Brevard held its 1-0 lead through the first 12 minutes of the second half.   Porcelli found Zvekan on a break away and Zvekan beat the MBU goalkeeper to finish with a goal to increase the lead to 2-0.

In the 74th minute, the Senior Day celebration continued as Brown scored an emotional goal to give the senior forward from Mooresville, North Carolina the seventh goal of her career.

The Brevard defense, led by seniors Worsencroft, Barker, Wright and Hatter as well as MK Smoak, Hailey Brien and Emily Howle limited the Fighting Squirrels to eight total shots and just three shots in the second half.

BC will return to action with a non-conference game vs. Johnson & Wales, 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Ives-Lemel Family Field.  The regular-season finale is set for Saturday, October 28 at conference rival William Peace in Cary, North Carolina.
