ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Brevard College women's basketball team (7-2) closed out the 2023 calendar year with an exhibition contest at nearby UNC Asheville, as the Tornados fell by a final of 72-34 to their NCAA Division I counterparts.
Lexi Shepard led all Tornados in the scoring department, totaling 14 points on six made field goals with a pair of 3-pointers as well. Shepard also contributed heavily in the rebounding department with five boards.
Naliyah Boyce and
Josie Hester added six points apiece, while
Chyna Pouncey grabbed six rebounds and
Christena Rhone dished out three assists.
UNC Asheville was paced a pair of double-digit scorers – Jaila Lee (17 points) and McKinley Brooks-Sumpter (14 points, 12 rebounds). The Bulldogs shot 42% from the field and turned 23 Brevard turnovers into 25 points, while the UNCA bench contributed 30 of the Bulldogs' 72 points. The hosts pounded the rock in the paint, scoring a total of 48 points in the painted area.
Brevard rings in the New Year on Wednesday, January 3 as the Tornados host Mary Baldwin University at the Boshamer Gymnasium, returning to USA South Conference play at 2 p.m.
