BC Drops Home Opener to Bob Jones in Four Sets

Parkins Leads the Way with Nine Kills for Tornados

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College volleyball team (2-4) dropped its 2023 home opener 3-1 to visiting Bob Jones (8-1) on Wednesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.  The match marked the first event played on the newly redesigned and refurbished court at the Boshamer Gymnasium on the campus of Brevard College.
 
Bob Jones won the opening set 25-17, before the Tornados took set two 25-20 to even the score 1-1 heading into set number three.  The Bruins were able to pull away late in the third to take a 2-1 advantage, then cruised to a 25-6 win in the fourth set to take the match victory.
 
Brevard's attack was led by senior Makenna Parkins who came alive in the second set en route to nine total kills.  Senior Kaitlyn Pressley registered seven kills to go along with a team-high 14 assists.  Junior Ashley Hoxit and sophomore Jaxson Tumicki each added five kills.
 
Senior libero Bailey Lance led all players with 22 digs to go along with five assists.  Junior setter Logan Priddy recorded 11 assists and five digs.
 
The Tornados registered seven service aces with Hoxit and Pressley each serving two aces.  Senior Caelyn Murphy, Lance and Priddy each recorded service aces as well.
 
Bob Jones was led by Victoria Glaze's game-high 22 kills and Timbre Cruz who served eight aces.  Kiersten Hoopes led all players with 42 assists, while libero Katelyn Hoopes recorded a team-high 19 digs.
 
The match featured 22 tied scores and seven lead changes.  Both teams played a tight first set with the score tied 11-11 and again at 15-15.  Bob Jones however would take 10 of the next 12 points to earn the first set win.
 
The second set was tied 10-10 until Brevard went on a run of its own, stretching its lead to 18-12.  The Bruins narrowed the gap later in the set, however BC finished strong with a kill by Hoxit on an assist from Priddy followed by a set-clinching block by Pressley and Tumicki to take the 25-20 victory.
 
Bob Jones however would answer back with wins in the third and fourth sets to take the 3-1 victory. 
 
Brevard will return to action with the start of its conference schedule by hosting a USA South Conference tri-match on Saturday at the new-look Boshamer Gymnasium.  The action begins with BC hosting Mary Baldwin at 10 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. match up with Methodist.  In between the two Tornado matches, Mary Baldwin will take on Methodist in neutral site action.
