BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's soccer team (1-3-1) dropped a hard-fought battle to Washington and Lee University (2-1-3), 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field in a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament first-round matchup.
Â
Sam O'Callaghan, a graduate defender from Wicklow, Ireland, scored BC's first goal of the contest and added an assist for a three-point performance.
Colin McCabe assisted on O'Callaghan's goal for his first assist as a member of the Tornados, while
Rocco Barbon put away BC's second goal of the match.
Â
Matteo Adler, Will Luik, and PJ Ryan put in goals for the Generals, with Luik and Taha Kaba logging assists.
Â
Brevard was able to open up the scoring in the 21st minute of play as
Ryan Lynch possessed the ball deep in General territory. After dodging several defenders and ultimately being dispossessed, the loose ball was collected by Collin McCabe, who played in an unmarked O'Callaghan, as the graduate right-back finished the scoring chance off to give the Tornados a 1-0 lead.
Â
Brevard was able to hold onto that advantage for 20 minutes, however the Generals flipped the script inside the final three minutes of first-half action.
Â
After taking a short corner, Luik whipped in a pass that was low and driving, and the ball was able to be flicked on by Kaba. Ryan was able to finish the effort off for the Generals, finishing the chance at the far post to level the contest.
Â
Then, misfortune struck the Tornados, as a Luik cross inside 45 seconds to play in the half sailed over BC's keeper
Matheus Rossi and into the back of the net, giving the Generals the 2-1 advantage just before the intermission.
Â
After 25 minutes of scoreless play in half number two, Brevard was able to bring the contest back to level terms after O'Callaghan's free kick was cashed in by Barbon, as the match drew even 2-2 with 20 minutes left to play.
Â
Barbon was the culprit of a 73rd minute foul in the General penalty box, and Adler – who drew the initial contact in the box – scored at the spot to give WLU a 3-2 edge in the latter stages of the match.
Â
Brevard created two more chances at goal through the final 17 minutes of play, but the Generals held strong to take the one-goal victory.
Â
BC fell despite outshooting WLU as a ream, 10-6, although the Generals held a 4-2 edge on shots attempts on-goal. Each side managed to win three corner kicks each.
Â
The Tornados hit the road to take on former conference foe Maryville College on Tuesday, September 19 at 7 p.m. in Maryville, Tennessee.
