MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Facing off against one of its former USA South Conference rivals, the Brevard College men's soccer team (2-3-1) took a 2-1 road win over Maryville College (3-3-3) on Tuesday evening in Maryville, Tennessee.
Brevard earned the victory in the matchup despite playing the final 22 minutes of the contest man-down due to a red card.
BC's
Igor da Silva scored the winner in the 46
th minute of play, looping in a long score that broke a scoreless affair. Playing with a man down, senior forward
Ryan Lynch gave the Tornados an insurance goal in the 69
th minute, scoring his team-best fourth goal of the season and his 26
th career score. The goal was assisted by
Martin Moguel Aguilar, marking the first-career assist for the sophomore defender from Mexico City, Mexico.
Maryville was able to draw within one goal with four minutes left to play, breaking up Brevard's shutout bid, but the Tornado 10-man defense held firm to clinch the road win.
Lynch and da Silva each tallied four shot attempts, while
Sam O'Callaghan added three and
Santiago Romero took two shots. Sophomore goalkeeper
Matheus Rossi registered two saves and earned his second win of the season.
Brevard held a 6-2 shot advantage in the scoreless first half of play, while the Scots won three corner kicks in the stanza. Lynch and O'Callaghan forced first-half saves from Maryville with a pair of on-target shots, but the Scots kept BC out of the back of the net as both sides went into the intermission without a goal.
In the first minute of the second half, da Silva broke the scoreless tie, as the senior midfielder launched a long, looping attempt from near the visiting bench that dropped into the top-left corner of the goal and over the outstretched arms of the Scot goalkeeper, marking the first goal of the 2023 campaign for da Silva.
Brevard was able to generate three more shot attempts at goal before a pivotal 58
th minute call, as da Silva was handed a straight red card after a foul that brought the Tornados down to 10 men for the remaining 22 minutes of the match.
Despite being a man down, Brevard continued to create chances, with
Marcos Silva forcing a save at the 66-minute mark. In the 69
th minute of play, BC was able to double its lead as a deep pass from Moguel Aguilar deflected off the Maryville center back and right to Lynch, who fired a left-footed shot past the MC keeper to give the Tornados a 2-0 lead in spite of playing a man down.
Maryville found the back of the net in the 86
th minute of action as Hayden Tate scored on Craig McIlwraith's assist. BC's defense tightened up after the Scot score, clinching the one-goal victory for the Tornados.
The victory brought the all-time series between the Tornados and the Scots to a 3-3 stalemate in six meetings.
Brevard returns to play with another tough regional test, as the Tornados travel to Atlanta to take on Emory University on Saturday at 5 p.m.
