ATLANTA – The Brevard College men's soccer team (2-5-1) narrowly fell to host Emory University (5-1-2), the 19th ranked team nationally in NCAA Division III, 2-1 on Saturday evening at the Woodruff Center in Atlanta.
The Tornados struck first in remarkable fashion with a goal by senior
Ryan Lynch on an assist from
Colin McCabe just 45 seconds into the contest. The goal gave Lynch five goals on the season in seven games played. Lynch, Brevard's all-time leading scorer in the NCAA era, upped his career total to 27 goals. For McCabe, it marked his second assist in the last three games for the native of Milledgeville, Georgia.
The quick strike by Lynch gave Brevard a 1-0 lead that the Tornados continued to maintain throughout the first half holding off the host Emory despite 11 shots by the Eagles. BC continued to hold off the 19th ranked team in the nation until Emory found the equalizer by converting a penalty kick in the 60th minute.
Tied 1-1 for the next eight minutes, the Eagles struck again on the eventual game-winning goal by Josh Grand. Ahead 2-1, Emory shut down the Tornados for the rest of the contest to secure the win.
Brevard fired off 11 total shots in the contest with Lynch leading the way with four shots, including three on-goal. Defender
Sam O'Callaghan and midfielder
Caue dos Santos each registered two shots, while McCabe,
Marcos Silva and
Luis Portillo all recorded a single shot.
Emory attempted 19 total shots with seven shots-on-goal in the match. The Eagles also had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Brevard goalkeeper
Matheus Rossi played all 90 minutes, recording five saves. Emory's Peter Wagner earned the win as goalkeeper for the Eagles with four saves.
After a challenging non-conference slate, Brevard will begin its USA South Conference schedule with its next match on Saturday, September 30 vs. Southern Virginia. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
