BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's soccer team (5-2, 1-0 USA South) extended its win streak to four matches in a row, as the Tornados shut out North Carolina Wesleyan University (2-6, 0-1 USAS) 3-0 in the USA South Conference opener on Homecoming Saturday at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
The victory marked Brevard's first in program history over the Battling Bishops, as Brevard has drew twice with NC Wesleyan alongside two previous defeats.
Senior forward
Grace Black scored her fifth goal of the season on an assist by freshman midfielder
Austin Huffman, while sophomore midfielder
Kiara Porcelli and freshman goalkeeper
Abby Nunez also scored goals in the first half of action. BC's defense shut down NC Wesleyan throughout all 90 minutes of play for the 3-0 triumph.
Nunez, a first-year Tornado keeper making just her second appearance of the season and her first collegiate start, did it all for the Tornados keeping a clean sheet with four saves while also scoring on a free kick for her first career goal.
NC Wesleyan was led by their goalkeeper Anna Yeakey, who made seven saves in the contest as the Tornados dominated possession all afternoon. Brevard featured 22 players total in the match, showcasing the depth of the 2023 BC women's soccer roster.
The Tornados opened the scoring up in the 22
nd minute of play when Huffman played a perfect through ball to Black, and the senior finished the opportunity off one-on-one with the keeper to give BC the early lead.
Brevard's lead doubled 10 minutes later when Nunez, BC's first-year keeper from Homestead, Florida, was called up to take a free kick from 30 yards out. The freshman Tornado ripped a shot into the top-right corner to score, extending the advantage.
Just before the first half concluded, a Bishop defender was handed a yellow card, setting up BC with another free-kick opportunity. The ball was played into the box by
MK Smoak, and it took a deflection off an arm of a NCW player, giving the Tornados a penalty kick chance. Porcelli took the shot, scoring from the spot to give Brevard a dominant 3-0 halftime cushion.
BC controlled the second half of play from wire-to-wire, outshooting the Battling Bishops 7-2 in the second stanza to cruise to the conference-opening victory.
The Tornados used a 16-7 shot advantage that included a 10-4 edge on shots on target, while Brevard controlled possession with four second-half corner kick opportunities.
Brevard will take its win streak on the road as the Tornados travel to Greensboro, North Carolina on Wednesday, September 27 at 6:30 p.m. to take on Greensboro College.
