BREVARD, N.C. – A pair of second-half goals gave the Brevard College women's soccer team (1-1-0) a well-earned 2-0 triumph over Carlow University (0-1-1) on Sunday evening in BC's home opener at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Senior forwards
Grace Black and
Taylor Richardson put away goals in the later stages of play to decide the contest, as senior forward
Abby Mayer (two assists) and junior defender
Hailey Brien assisted on the scores.
Brevard dominated the contest wire-to-wire, outshooting Carlow 21-1 including a 14-1 shot-on-goal margin. Carlow's Lyndsey Szekely racked up the saves thanks in part to Brevard's attacking onslaught, as the keeper made 12 saves in 88 minutes of action.
Black led all players in the game with five shot attempts, as all five found the frame. Mayer and Richardson logged four shots each, and Brien and
Tae Brown each let two shots fly.
Brevard kept the lineup fresh, as 22 total players (11 starters and 11 substitutes) made appearances on the pitch.
Nicole Arroyo got the start for Brevard in goal, as the sophomore keeper made a save and held her ground to shut out the Celtics.
The victory marked the second consecutive win for the Tornados over the Celtics, as the two programs met for the first time last season in what was an identical scoreline of 2-0 in favor of Brevard.
Brevard will look to add to its winning ways when the Tornados travel to Greensboro, North Carolina on Wednesday, September 6 to face off against Guilford College at 6 p.m.
