MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Brevard College volleyball team (1-3) earned its first victory of the 2023 season with a five-set win over Huntingdon (0-4) on Sunday afternoon at the Labor Day Classic in Maryville, Tennessee.
In the second match of the day, BC fell to host Maryville (3-2) in four sets to conclude the season-opening invitational.
Match One: Brevard 3, Huntingdon 2
The Tornados came back from a 2-1 deficit and took the fourth and fifth sets over Huntingdon to capture the first win of the season in a neutral site contest.
Senior
Kaitlyn Pressley recorded a sensational triple-double with 20 assists, 18 kills and 16 digs.
Senior
Ashley Hoxit registered 12 kills, while
Makenna Parkins notched 11 kills.
Setter
Logan Priddy facilitated the Tornado hitters throughout the match with a team-high 23 assists. Libero
Bailey Lance led all players in the contest with 31 digs.
Brevard's service game was tremendous with 13 total aces. Senior
Caelyn Murphy and Priddy each delivered four aces, while Pressley and Parkins added two service winners apiece. Hoxit registered a service ace as well to help the cause.
Trailing 2-1 in sets, the Tornados and Hawks played a tight fourth set with BC prevailing 25-23 to force a decisive fifth stanza.
In the final set, Brevard pulled away with a couple of key sequences as Parkins set up Pressley followed by a Hoxit kill on a Priddy assist. The Tornados then clinched the win on a Hoxit service that led to a Hawks' error and the five-set victory for BC.
Match Two: Maryville 3, Brevard 1
Host Maryville defended its home court with a four-set win over the Tornados in the event's final contest. BC won the first set 25-22, before dropping sets two through four.
Parkins led the Tornados with nine kills and 11 digs, while Lance recorded a team-high 19 digs. Priddy was the leading facilitator with 17 assists.
In the first set; Brevard stretched out its lead to 18-11 behind a long scoring run during Lance's service that included a service ace and back-to-back kills by Parkins and Pressley. The Tornados then cruised to take a 25-21 set win.
The Scots bounced back however taking a 25-19 set two victory to tie the match at 1-1. Maryville then won the third set 25-15 before clinching the match with a 25-21 fourth set victory.
BC returns to action with a road trip at Warren Wilson on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Swannanoa, North Carolina.
