BREVARD, N.C. – Junior forward
Mikayla Zvekan recorded just the fourth three-assist game in Brevard College women's soccer NCAA-era history, as the Tornados (12-0-2, 6-0-1 USA South) won their eighth-consecutive match and kept their historic, unbeaten season rolling with a comeback 3-1 triumph over William Peace University (5-5-2, 3-4-0 USAS) late Wednesday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Zvekan, a third-year Tornado from Draper, Utah, joins BC alums Alyssa Caracena (Aug. 29, 2008), Caroline David (Sept. 22, 2018), and Alyssa Hetherington (Sept. 27, 2022) as BC women's soccer student-athletes to accomplish the feat of assisting on three goals in one single game.
Zvekan teamed up with
Kennedy Kelly on a beautiful build-up for Brevard's first goal of the afternoon, as the Tornados tied the contest in the 16
th minute of play, answering back a 10th-minute strike by the Pacers' Mia Rumachik assisted by Emma Mayer. Kennedy played a high arching ball into the box that Zvekan hit with her chest right to freshman forward
Brennan Howell. Howell ripped a shot into the right corner of the goal to tie the match up.
BC took the lead in the 31
st minute, as the Tornados continued their positive play with a great scoring chance. Zvekan fired a shot of her own that was narrowly saved by WPU's keeper, but
Austin Huffman was on the spot to put in the rebound and give Brevard the lead, 2-1 – a lead the Tornados would take into the intermission.
Brevard followed a first half that they outshot the Pacers 10-2 with a 12-3 shot margin in the second half, as the Tornados ripped 22 shots to William Peace's five with a 10-2 edge in on-target shot attempts. BC also held a 10-1 advantage on corner kicks throughout the match.
With BC knocking on the door through much of the early stages of the second half, the Tornados finally broke through to extend their lead in the 66
th minute. A foul on the near sideline set up a free-kick opportunity for Zvekan at the 10-yard line to the left of the penalty box. The junior delivered the ball into the far post, where Guillermo met it with a touch that nestled the ball into the back of the net, extending Brevard's lead to a two-goal margin.
The Tornados handled their business from there, shutting the Pacers out the rest of the way to take the two-goal win and keep the unbeaten season alive.
Brevard will prepare for a monumental contest on Senior Day, as the two top teams in the USA South Conference square off. The first-place Tornados will take on second-place Southern Virginia University (6-7-3, 5-1-1 USAS) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
