Tornados Fall in Overtime Thriller at Home to Begin 2024-25 Season

Brevard Starts Season with Overtime Battle at Home

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (0-1) opened its 2024-25 season with a tough overtime loss, 101-93 vs Randolph College (1-0) on Saturday afternoon at the Boshamer Gymnasium.         

In his collegiate debut, freshman Brennan Wansley led Brevard with 26 points as KK Horton (16 pts), Jaden Carnes (12 pts) and Charlie Hester (10 pts) all reached double figures as well.  Wansley, a native of Buford, Georgia, was 10-of-15 on field goals and 5-of-6 from the three point line, while recording a game-high four steals. 
Horton led BC with eight rebounds to go along with four assists, while Carnes added six boards.

Senior Charles Reed matched the single-game record for blocks in the DIII-era with four blocked shots to lead all players.  With the performance, Reed also moved into sole possession of 10th place with 215 defensive blocks.

The Wildcats were led by Jordan Phillips-McLloyd who scored 38 points on 11-for-16 from the field and a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line.  Landon Wagoner scored 24 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

Randolph opened the game with a quick start, leading 4-0. Charlie Hester, a senior from Huntersville, North Carolina, then scored the first points of the 2024-25 season for the Tornados.

Randolph built a 9-point lead, 22-13, with 13:47 to play in the first half, but. BC quickly struck  back by narrowing it down to just a 3 point game (26-23).  BC then went on a run at the end of the first half to take a 43-36 lead into the intermission.

BC went on a 10-4 scoring run coming out of halftime to build its largest lead of the afternoon at 60-45. Randolph tried to close the gap, narrowing the deficit to just three points with four minutes left in the second half.

Randolph used a full court press to continue its comeback and won the free-throw battle down the stretch to tie the game 84-84 to force the game into overtime. The Wildcats took a commanding lead to start overtime with a  9-2 run and outscored BC 17-9 in the period to take the win.

For the game, Brevard outshot the Wildcats 53.2% to 49.2% in field goals.  At the free throw line, Randolph was 32-for-34 (94.1%) and BC went 16-for-25 (64%).  Randolph also won the battle on the boards with 37 total rebounds compared to 29 for BC.

Brevard returns to the Boshamer Gymnasium for its second game of the year on Tuesday at 6 p.m. vs. Covenant College on the campus of Brevard College.
