BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (5-2) drained 17 3-pointers en route to a six-point victory, 99-93, over Piedmont (4-3) on Saturday afternoon at the Boshamer Gymnasium in the 2024 home finale for the Tornados.
Â
Twain Wilson led an effective second unit that outscored Piedmont 38-14 in bench points, with the Columbia, South Carolina freshman putting up 17 points on a perfect 6-for-6 for the field that includes a flawless 4-for-4 mark from long distance.
Â
Brennan Wansley added 16 points, matching Wilson's four 3-pointers while adding seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
Charlie Hester also scored 16 while totaling a team-high eight rebounds.Â
Jadon Carnes made a team-best seven field goals en route to 15 points and five rebounds.
Brock McKnight scored a career-high 11 points and three 3-pointers, including some big buckets down the stretch, while
KK Horton rounded out BC's six double-figure scorers with 10 points that included a 6-for-6 mark from the free throw line.
Charles Reed dished out a team-high five assists, while
Drew Smith added eight points and a pair of 3-pointers.
Â
Brevard's 17 made 3-pointers is its second-highest output from distance of the season, as the Tornados matched the program NCAA-era record earlier this season in a 100-65 win over Bob Jones (Nov. 14). BC as a team knocked in a season-best 88% of its free throws (14-for-16). Saturday was also the third time this season that Brevard has dished out 20 or more assists, as the Tornados distributed 24 assists in the victory.
Â
Piedmont scored 56 of its 93 points inside the paint, and scored 16 from the free-throw line. Dylan Patrick led the way with 24 points on a 10-for-15 performance from the field. Fisher Darden added 21 points with nine made field goals, while Bailey Wiseman totaled 19 points. Javi Marlowe grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Â
Piedmont scored 25 transition points to Brevard's 13 and narrowly outrebounded BC 34-30. The biggest discrepancy on Saturday was from beyond the arc, as the Tornados nailed 17 3's to the Lions' five.
Â
Brevard jumped out to a 10-point lead, 22-12, at the 11:08 mark in the first half, and extended that margin to a game-high 15 points at 38-23 with 6:05 left to go in the first stanza. Brevard totaled 52 first-half points and held a seven-point lead, 52-45 at the intermission.
Â
Piedmont was able to cut into BC's lead, trimming it down to one point at the 12:55 mark, 61-60. The visitors took their first lead of the game with eight minutes left to go as Patrick made a fastbreak layup that gave Piedmont a very brief 70-69 lead. Just 15 seconds later, Smith nailed a three from the top of the key as BC retook the lead, 72-70.
Â
Piedmont tied the game back at 72 off another Patrick bucket, but Wilson nailed a 3-pointer and then got three the old fashioned way with an and-one layup at the 6:05 mark that put Brevard back up by three, 78-75.
Â
Patrick once again made a layup in the paint to cut the deficit back down to one for the Lions, but a Smith layup followed by 3-pointers by Wilson and McKnight forced a Piedmont timeout as Brevard was back up by nine, 86-77.
Â
From that point, the Tornados were able to ice the game as Piedmont never drew closer than two possessions on the scoreboard. Key buckets from Carnes and Hester, coupled with big free throws in the final minute by Hester, Horton, Reed, and Wansley helped seal the home win for the Tornados.
Â
Brevard will compete next in two weeks' time, as the Tornados travel to Ashland, Virginia to compete in the Suyes Yellow Jacket Classic, hosted by Randolph-Macon. BC will first play Ursinus on Saturday, December 28 at 5 p.m. before battling either Randolph-Macon or Stevenson the following day on Sunday, December 29. The Tornados are next at home on Saturday, January 4, 2025 against Southern Virginia in the USA South Conference opener at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
