BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (0-3) fell in a tight matchup against non-conference foe Oglethorpe University (4-3), 8-4, on a cold, windy Wednesday night in the home opener at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
The Stormy Petrels scored four quick goals in the first eight minutes of play that proved to be the difference in the contest, as the sides were equal 4-4 from that point on with the Tornados outscoring Oglethorpe in the second quarter and matching the visitors in the fourth period.
Four different Tornados found the back of the net, with
Parker Corbett scoring his seventh goal of the season and
Drew Pond adding his second goal of 2024, while
Brice Peterson and
Nate Stone notched their first goals of 2024.
Gage Khayat dished out a team-high two assists with Pond also adding an assist to his ledger alongside a team-high six ground balls.
Jacob Gravely caused a team-best three turnovers and
Logan Southern won his first career faceoff. Junior goalkeeper
Jack Hicks made 10 saves.
Oglethorpe was led by Quade Bedgood, who scored a game-high four goals. Jazz Washington added two goals and an assist for three points, while Robbie Coull and Isaiah Pendleton-Moore also found the back of the net. Hinton Chandler grabbed a game-high 10 ground balls and won 12 of his 14 faceoff opportunities, with Washington causing three turnovers defensively. Xay Duax (4-3) was the goalkeeper of record for the Stormy Petrels, stopping 13 BC shot attempts.
Brevard held a 33-26 shot advantage, but Oglethorpe had a narrow 18-17 edge on shots on frame. Both sides had trouble in the turnover department, with BC committing 30 turnovers (16 caused) compared to 28 for Oglethorpe (15 caused). The Tornados went 21-for-26 on clear attempts to the Stormy Petrels' 18-for-22 mark, and the visitors grabbed 39 ground balls compared to 35 from Brevard. The biggest statistical difference was on the faceoff, as Oglethorpe won 13 of the game's 16 total faceoffs. BC went 1-for-4 on man-up opportunities, while the Tornados went penalty-free throughout the game.
Following Oglethorpe's 4-0 start to the game, BC's Pond capped a power play opportunity off with a goal delivered by a Khayat assist to start the second period of play. Oglethorpe snapped nearly 10 minutes of scoreless play with a goal at the 4:31 mark in the second quarter, while Corbett answered back at the 3:22 mark with an unassisted goal. The visitors held a 5-2 edge at the halftime break.
Oglethorpe started the second half much like the first, scoring two goals within 40 seconds of each other to extend its lead to a 7-2 margin. Peterson scored at the 7:37 mark on Pond's assist to cut the deficit back down to four goals. The two teams traded goals in the fourth quarter as Oglethorpe earned its fourth win of the season, 8-4.
Brevard is back in action on Tuesdsay, March 5 at 6 p.m., taking on Hiram College for the first time in program history as BC continues a five-game home stretch.
