BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's lacrosse team (0-4) put together a late charge, cutting their deficit to four goals midway through the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell by a final of 16-10 against Hiram College (4-1) on Tuesday night at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Junior goalkeeper Jack Hicks surpassed his previous career high, making a total of 23 save. The Greensboro, North Carolina native broke his career mark of 22 saves set last season.
Offensively, sophomore attacker Gage Khayat scored a career-high three goals to lead all Tornados and also grabbed five ground balls. Graduate attacker Parker Corbett and junior attacker Drew Pond logged two goals and one assist each, while Brice Peterson put forth his first career multi-goal game with a pair of scores.
Atticus Cooper added a goal and two assists, Michael Peters dished out his second career assist and led all Tornados with seven ground balls, and Scott Bundy dished out his first career assist. Tyler Cameron helped pace Brevard's defense with three caused turnovers and six ground balls, as Hicks and Nick Charania snatched five ground balls each. Charinia (three caused turnovers) and Jacob Gravely (two caused turnovers) also registered multiple caused turnovers in the matchup.
Hiram's Noah Pilgrim led all players with six goals and two assists to finish with eight points offensively. Ethan Mayer added five goals as the duo accounted for 11 of Hiram's 16 scores. William Luketich turned in a dominant effort, going 23-for-26 on faceoffs while accumulating a game-best 12 ground balls. Pilgrim added nine ground balls and Hiram's defensive duo of Ethan Bitong and Bricen Jones each caused three turnovers.
Hiram led the shot count 33-18 at the intermission and held a 56-47 edge in total shots for the match. Turnovers were near even with BC committing one less turnover (18-17) than Hiram. In addition to its good work on faceoffs, Hiram went 16-for-17 on clear attempts to Brevard's 20-for-25 mark. The Terriers had a narrow 50-45 margin on ground balls as well.
Hiram scored two goals inside the contest's first two minutes to take a 2-0 lead before BC found consecutive goals from Cooper and Khayat. Pilgrim and Khayat then traded goals as the game was knotted up 3-3 at the 3:05 mark of the first quarter. However, in the final three minutes of the first period Hiram scored three times to hold a 6-3 lead heading into the second quarter.
Corbett scored man-up to cut the deficit to two goals early in the second, but Hiram closed the period on a 3-0 scoring run to take a 9-4 lead into the locker rooms.
Peterson found the back of the net for his first goal of the day in a low-scoring third period while Hiram found the net twice as the visitors went into the fourth period up by six goals, 11-5.
The two sides went on to combine for a total of 10 goals in a hectic fourth quarter of action, as Brevard scored four of the first six goals of the period to knock the deficit down to a four-goal margin, 13-9, following a Khayat power-play goal with 7:05 left to play. However, the Tornados were unable to capitalize on several Terrier penalties, as Hiram found the back of the net man-down at the 4:11 mark. Pond scored his second goal of the game within the final two minutes, but back-to-back Pilgrim scored iced the game away in favor of the Terriers, 16-10.
Brevard is back at home on Friday at 5 p.m. to cap off a doubleheader of action alongside the BC women's lacrosse squad. The Tornados take on Husson University for the third straight season at Ives-Lemuel Family Field.
