GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Brevard College women's basketball team (15-6, 10-5 USAS) recorded its second consecutive road win with a USA South Conference victory over host Greensboro College (6-16, 6-9 USAS) 61-50 on Tuesday evening in Greensboro, North Carolina. Three Tornados set career highs in three different statistical categories to lead the winning effort.
Junior center Naliyah Boyce scored a career-high 25 points on a 12-of-19 shooting night, while pulling down a season-high eight rebounds to lead all players. The output broke Boyce's previous scoring high of 19 points set earlier this season vs. Southern Virginia. The performance marked the sixth time in the last eight games that the native of Marion, North Carolina has scored in double figures.
Junior point guard Lexi Shepard also set a career-high with eight assists to go along with three rebounds, two steals and a made 3-pointer. Sophomore guard Christena Rhone put on a career-best performance on the defensive end with five steals, while matching a career-high with seven rebounds. Rhone also chipped in nine points on the offensive end.
Sophomore Jada Petty-Wilkins added 11 points on three made 3-pointers to help the offensive effort.
Greensboro was led by Samiah Mitchell who scored 14 points and Azuria Barrino with 10 points and eight rebounds.
BC outscored Greensboro 15-13 in the first quarter, then pulled away with a 16-10 advantage in the second period to take a 31-23 lead into halftime.
The Pride then fought back in the third quarter with a 9-0 run to end the period, cutting BC' lead to six points entering the fourth quarter.
Greensboro scored the first five points in the fourth period to extend the scoring run to 14-0 and cut the deficit to one.
With six minutes to play in the contest,
Makayla Street hit a layup to snap the Greensboro scoring run and end BC's drought.
With four minutes to play, Greensboro cut the deficit to 48-46 until Rhone drilled a 3-pointer off an assist by
Alexis Marshall to stretch the lead to five points. Petty-Wilkins then hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Rhone sank four straight free throws to seal the win for the Tornados.
BC shot 45% in the contest, while the Pride hit on 38% of their shots from the field. The Tornados won the rebounding battle 39-28, including a 9-6 edge on the offensive glass.
Brevard will return to action with a key USA South Conference contest on Saturday, February 10 vs. Methodist with tipoff set for 2 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
