NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Brevard College softball team (3-7) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Kenyon College (6-4) on the first day for the Tornados at the Fastpitch Dreams Tournament at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Kenyon won the first contest 10-0, then took game two of the twin bill 4-3 in extra innings.
GAME ONE: KENYON 10, BREVARD 0 (5 INNINGS)
The Owls took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then added runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames en route to the run-rule victory.
Brevard managed two hits in the contest coming from freshman
MacKenzie Wilborne and third baseman
Regan Winkler. The Tornados also drew three walks, coming from
Karley Queen,
Jadyn Harlow, and
Rylee Locklear, to create additional base running opportunities. Locklear recorded a career-high two stolen bases and Queen stole a bag as well.
Kenyon was led offensively by third baseman Madison Buckwalter who went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Kylie Hamm (4-3) of the Owls was the winning pitcher, throwing four shutout innings.
Junior
Grace Reynolds (1-4) started in the circle for the Tornados. Freshman
Logan Masinsky made her fourth career appearance in relief, allowing no earned runs on two hits in one inning pitched.
GAME TWO: KENYON 4, BREVARD 3 (8 INNINGS)
In game two of the doubleheader, the two teams were tied 2-2 after the four innings. Kenyon went ahead 3-2 in the sixth, before Brevard tied the contest up again at 3-3 in the seventh. The game headed to extra innings with the Owls recording a walk-off win in the bottom of the eighth.
Kenyon jumped on BC again with a run in the first inning, however the Tornados answered with a sacrifice fly RBI by Locklear scoring shortstop
Gabby Hooper in the second inning. The Owls then went ahead again by a run until Hooper delivered on an RBI-single to score Winkler in the fourth.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the see-saw affair saw Kenyon go ahead once again with a run in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.
With their backs against the wall, the Tornados came through with a dramatic run in the seventh inning. Center fielder
Karley Queen reached base on an error then was moved over to third base on a single by Harlow. Winkler then followed with a single to score Queen to tie up the game 3-3.
Kenyon then was retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. After holding the Tornados scoreless in the top of the eighth, the Owls won the game on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame to take the doubleheader.
Winkler went 2-for-3 to lead Brevard at the plate. Harlow, Hooper,
Summer Crist,
KateLynn Olive and
Michaela Jones all delivered with base hits for BC as well.
Brevard's
Abby Delp (2-2) pitched the entire contest, allowing no earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking none in 7.2 innings of work. Hamm (5-3) earned the victory for the Owls for the second straight game.
The Tornados return to action with more competition at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex with a game vs. Gwynedd Mercy at 5 p.m. on Tuesday evening.
