BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team (6-9) picked up a pair of wins to close out action for the Tornados at the 2024 Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Thursday afternoon.
Brevard dominated Thiel College in a run-rule win, 10-0, before taking a 9-7 win over the University of Maine-Farmington.
GAME ONE: BREVARD 10, THIEL 0 (5 INNINGS)
Brevard dominated from the onset of the first game of its final day at Myrtle Beach, scoring five runs in both the second and fourth innings to secure its first run-rule win of 2024, 10-0.
Abby Delp (4-2) turned in her third complete-game performance of the Spring Break trip, and her second CG win, going all five innings played allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and no runs. Following the first game of the day, Delp's ERA sat at 2.14 through seven starts this season as the Waxhaw, North Carolina junior has totaled five complete games in 39 and 1/3 innings pitched this season so far.
Offensively,
Olivia Martinez and
MacKenzie Wilborne each had two hits apiece, with Wilborne notching a double and Martinez collecting a triple. Eight out of Brevard's nine starting hitters recorded hits as BC slugged 10 hits total.
Jadyn Harlow hit a double as well, while
Rylee Locklear added a two-RBI triple to match Wilborne and
Regan Winkler's two RBI outings.
Following a costly Thiel error that led off the bottom of the second, the Tomcats were able to get consecutive outs and nearly get out of the inning. However, with two rinners on and two outs, Brevard out together four hits and an RBI HBP to bring across five runs and take a commanding early advantage, 5-0.
Brevard tacked on further to its advantage in the bottom of the fourth, as Winkler drove in an run on an RBI groundout. Again with two outs in the inning, Brevard rallied as Locklear scored two with a triple, followed by Martinez's RBI triple.
Summer Crist capped off the scoring for Brevard, plating Martinez with an RBI single that made it 10-0. Delp proceeded to sit the Tomcats down in order in the top of the fifth to wrap up the dominant win on the final day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
GAME TWO: BREVARD 9, UNIV. OF MAINE-FARMINGTON 7
Brevard's offense turned in a near-duplicate performance from its first contest of the day, as BC scored nine runs on 10 hits in the victory over UMF.
Karley Queen went 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot with two RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base, as BC racked up a total of seven stolen bases vs. the Beavers.
Gabby Hooper, Harlow, and Wilborne all had two hits apiece, with Hooper recording a pair of doubles.
Freshman pitcher
Logan Masinsky earned her first collegiate win in the circle for Brevard, throwing a complete game surrendering five earned runs with five strikeouts and 11 hits.
UMF struck first, scoring a run on a bases-loaded error and an RBI groundout in the top of the first to take the early 2-0 lead. BC answered back with a Hooper RBI double followed by a Beaver error that tied things up after two innings played, 2-2. Martinez hit a single, and a fielding error by UMF allowed Winkler to come across in the bottom of the third, giving BC a 3-2 edge. Brevard then put together a three-run fourth inning with an RBI double from Queen, a double steal, and a Harlow RBI single as the Tornados jumped ahead, 6-2.
UMF scored a run in the top of the fifth with an RBI single, but Brevard held serve with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, extending its lead to a six-run margin, 9-3. Maine-Farmington put together a late rally, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth and cutting the deficit to two runs after a two-out passed ball. However, Masinsky and the Tornado defense held strong to close out the two-run win, 9-7.
Brevard returns from the Beach and hits the road once more on Sunday, March 17, taking on Averett University in Danville, Virginia at 1 and 3 p.m.
