GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Brevard College baseball team (5-5) fell in a high-scoring contest, 15-10, to Guilford College (3-5) in the series opener on Saturday at McBane Field.
The Quakers used a seven-run fifth inning that broke the contest open. The Tornados were able to score five runs in the final two innings of action, but ultimately fell short of the comeback attempt. Each side combined for 25 runs and 35 hits in the slugfest.
Logan Clark (3-for-4) and
Lucas Granata (3-for-6) each produced three-hit games, with Granata logging a team-high three RBI and Clark adding a triple, a run scored, and two RBI.
CP Pyle and
Frankie Vasquez each had doubles, with
Cale Oehler also producing a triple for the Tornados.
Connor Crosby (1-3) was BC's starter, letting up 10 hits and five earned runs in four innings of work.
Hatcher Bailey,
Matthew Evans, and
Jaeger Pankowski also worked on the mound for the Tornados.
BC got going on the board first in the top of the third with a
Luke Morton sacrifice fly and a
Logan Clark RBI single, as the Tornados took the early edge 2-0. Guilford answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and three in the bottom of the fourth as the hosts took a 5-2 lead. Clark brought home
Logan Sawyer with his RBI triple in the top of the fifth, but the Quakers answered back with a ferocious seven-run inning in the bottom of the fifth that changed the outlook of the contest.
Guilford tacked on some insurance in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 13-3 game, but BC kept the contest going by scoring two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. Guilford notched a two-RBI double in the bottom of the eight before a four-run spurt from the Tornados in the top of the ninth, but the late spark was too late as Guilford came away with the five-run victory, 15-10.
The two sides are back in action with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m., with both contests scheduled for seven innings.
