Tornados Win Pair of Matches over Pacers

BC Earns First Conference W of 2023-24, Improves to 4-4 on the Season

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's tennis team (4-4, 1-1 USAS) defeated William Peace University (1-5, 1-2 USAS) in a pair of tightly contested matches held Saturday and Sunday at the McCoy Tennis Complex.

On Saturday in a match that counted toward the conference standings, Brevard topped WPU 6-3.  Sunday's non-conference competition followed with the Tornados edging the Pacers 5-4.

On Saturday, Brevard took a 2-0 lead to open doubles play.  Brooke Garland and Madison Bowen won 8-1 to take number two doubles.  Gracie Spangler and Savannah Anderson defeated their opponents with an identical 8-1 score in number three doubles.

Number one doubles was a hotly contested match with WPU's Kala Price and Camryn Strong edging BC's top team of Hannah Hersh and Sophie Trantham 8-7 with a 7-5 tiebreaker.

BC came up big in singles play with Garland (no. 2), Trantham (no. 4), Spangler (no. 5) and Anderson (no. 6) winning by a combined score of 48-1 in their four matches to secure the team victory in USA play.  Anderson, Garland and Trantham each won their matches 6-0, 6-0, while Spangler cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

On Sunday, Brevard went with several different combinations of players.  Anderson and Jordyn Bowen won handily 8-1 in number two doubles.  Garland and Jada Ore  battled in no. 1 doubles, while Spangler and Marina Thompson won via a withdrawal in number three doubles.

Ahead 3-1 after doubles competition plus a withdrawal by the Pacers in no. 6 singles, Brevard needed two wins to clinch a team victory.

WPU won three singles matches, yet Spangler came through 6-0, 6-0 to take no. 3 singles and Bowen won 6-3, 6-0 in no. 5 singles to clinch the match.
