BREVARD, N.C. – Junior midfielder
Emily Denaga added to an already impressive resume at Brevard College, setting the program career record for goals scored as the BC women's lacrosse team (5-4) took the lead late in the second quarter and didn't look back in a 13-10 victory over Averett University (1-5) on Wednesday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Denaga, a native of Buford, Georgia midway through her third season with the Tornados, took over the all-time BC women's lacrosse career goals record with four goals in the winning effort, giving her 127 career scores. Denaga already holds the single-season and career draw control records at BC, surpassing the 300 career draw controls mark last Saturday at North Carolina Wesleyan.
Denaga scored a team-high four goals, with two coming on free-position shots as the Tornados collectively put in a season-high seven free-position goals. The junior midfielder also contributed heavily on the defensive end with a team-best six ground balls and four caused turnovers in addition to five draw controls won.
Sophomore midfielder
Paige Kneubuhler added three goals and an assist, and caused a team-high five turnovers with four ground balls collected and a free-position goal, joining
Grace Blanton,
Arianna Casertano, Denaga,
Kelsey Hamrick, and Xan Hil with FPG's. Hill and Casertano added two goals each while Casertano also added an assist to her ledger.
Kyla Smith-Fondall (4-4), a freshman goalkeeper from Baytown, Texas, turned in her most successful collegiate start to-date, stopping a season and career-high 17 shots in the Tornado win to earn her fourth victory of the season.
Averett's offense was led by Cayden Holdsworth, who scored five goals and an assist for six points. Ava Soucek scored twice, while Faith Bowlin, Kait Cashman, and Irenia Torre all registered goals for the Cougars. Sheyla Romero grabbed five ground balls and caused four turnovers as well.
Averett fell despite outshooting Brevard 33-to-24, in part to Smith-Fondall and the Tornado defense making critical stops – especially down the stretch of action. Averett went 18-for-21 on clear attempts compared to a 17-for-28 mark by the Tornados, and the Cougars were able to snatch 30 ground balls while BC recorded 22. The Tornados did however win 14 draw controls to Averett's 11, and BC went 7-for-10 on free-position shots compared to a 1-for-5 mark by AU.
The first quarter was back-and-forth with each side trading goals. BC outscored Averett 3-2 in the second stanza to hold a slim 4-3 lead heading into halftime.
Denaga shattered the program career goals record in quick order as the second half began, scoring her first goal of the match 20 seconds into the third quarter while finding the back of the net again at the 13:33 mark to set the record. Holdsworth answered back with consecutive goals for the Cougars to trim the deficit back down to one goal, 6-5, but three-straight Tornado goals grew BC's lead to four, 9-5, midway through the third period.
Averett managed a pair of scores to cut the BC lead back down to two goals, but following seven scoreless minutes of action, Denaga found the back of the net for the third time in the game and the Tornados took a three-goal advantage into the fourth and final period, 10-7.
Goals from Blanton, Denaga, and Hill in the fourth quarter gave BC all the insurance that it would need, as two late Holdsworth goals proved all for naught as the Tornados came away with the 13-10 non-conference triumph.
The Tornados return to USA South Conference play on Saturday at 3 p.m., as Brevard visits Greensboro College for more conference action in Greensboro, North Carolina.
