Men’s Tennis Narrowly Defeated by Scots 5-4

Tornados Battle Back with Four Singles Wins

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Brevard College men's tennis team (3-11) narrowly fell 5-4 to Maryville College (5-12) in a non-conference road match on Wednesday afternoon in Maryville, Tennessee. 

Despite dropping all three doubles matches, the Tornados fought back to win four out of the six singles contests, but were unable to find a fifth singles win as Maryville clinched the narrow team win. 

After being defeated in doubles action across the board, BC answered back with wins in flights 1-3 singles. Four-time USA South Rookie of the Week Hayden LeBlanc won a thriller over Maryville, James Smith, taking a 7-6 decision in the first set via a 7-1 tiebreaker before Smith answered back with a 6-4 win in the second set. LeBlanc earned a 13-11 third set tiebreaker victory to claim number-one singles. 

Bryce Bernitt dominated in number-two singles play 6-1, 6-3, while Devin Horton battled back from an 0-6 defeat in the first set of number-three singles, winning the second set 7-5 and clinching the match with a third set tiebreak, 11-9. 

Maryville was able to clinch the match with wins in numbers four and five singles. With the team result already decided, Brian Seon earned a one-set 8-6 match win over Ben Wyrick. 

The Tornados hit the road on Saturday for USA South Conference action as Brevard takes on Methodist University at 11 a.m. in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
