Pacers Take Two from Tornados on Senior Day

Game Three Slated for Sunday at 4 PM

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (16-16, 9-8 USA South) dropped both games of a Senior Day doubleheader to William Peace University (13-20, 8-8 USAS), 9-6 and 10-4, on Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.

The Tornados honored its senior and graduate class during a special pre-game ceremony on the field before action began. The Pacers used seven unanswered runs in the middle innings to come back from an early deficit and defeat Brevard 9-6 in game one of the series, and the Pacers scored three runs in the sixth and seventh innnings of game two to pull away for a 10-4 victory.

GAME ONE: WILLIAM PEACE 9, BREVARD 6

William Peace got on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the first before Brevard struck for a three-run bottom of the second inning as Colson Miller hit his fifth home run in his last five contests - a two-run shot that put BC up 2-1. Lucas Granata followed suit with an RBI single that scored Luke Morton that made it a 3-1 score.

The Pacers answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third to tie things back up, 3-3, and then the visitors surged for a three-run fourth inning with two RBI singles and a run scored on a fly out double play that ended the frame. William Peace tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend its lead up to 8-3, completing the Pacers' seven-run stretch.

Logan Sawyer drove in Hayden Jennings on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth, but the Pacers scored in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch to make it a 9-4 game. Cale Oehler brought CP Pyle around to score on a sac fly in the bottom of the inning, and Granata tallied his second RBI of the game on an RBI groundout, but BC's comeback effort would stall there as the visitors took game one, 9-6.

Miller, Morton, and Frankie Vasquez all had two-hit efforts, with Morton and Oehler registering doubles and Miller accounting for a two-run homer. Jennings came around to score twice, and Granata and Miller each drove in a pair of runs.

Jacob Thompson (2-3) got the start for the Tornados, giving up 12 hits and five earned runs in five innings with four strikeouts. Cesar Rodriguez worked the remaining four innings of game action, surrendering four hits and two runs.

WPU totaled four extra-base hits in game one, and starter Jack McIntosh went six and a third innings with seven hits and four earned runs allowed in the winning effort.

GAME TWO: WILLIAM PEACE 10, BREVARD 4

Morton and Pyle registered multi-hit performances in game two of the doubleheader, with Pyle driving in three total runs in the contest. BC hit four doubles in game two, and a total of 13 Tornados came to the plate via late game substitutions.

Both sides were held scoreless in the first two frames before Brevard broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the third, using two singles and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases up. Pyle drove in Morton to give Brevard the early 1-0 lead, but the Tornados were unable to muster more offensive production in the frame, stranding the bases loaded.

A bunt RBI in the top of the fifth tied things up as WPU found its first run of the ballgame. The Pacers struck for three in the top of the sixth with a two-RBI single and an RBI groundout, pushing their lead up to a 4-1 margin.

William Peace broke the game open in the top of the seventh with two RBI doubles and a run scored off a Tornado error, as the Pacers jumped ahead 7-1. Consecutive Tornado doubles in the bottom-half of the frame cut the deficit down to five runs at 7-2, but the Pacers tacked on a pair in the eighth and one in the ninth to give themselves all the insurance they would need.

Seniors made an impact off the bench for the Tornados in the bottom of the ninth, with Mykah Johnson reaching on a hit-by-pitch, while Joc Pledger recorded a single. The senior duo both came around to score on a Pyle two-RBI double, as the game would conclude with the Pacers clinching the series win 10-4.

The Tornados will attempt to salvage game three on Sunday at 4 p.m.
