BREVARD, N.C. - Senior midfielder Atticus Cooper totaled a career-high five points on four goals and an assist as the Brevard College men's lacrosse team (2-12, 0-6 USAS) celebrated Senior Night at Ives-Lemel Family Field on Saturday evening.
The Tornados dropped a 17-8 decision to the visiting Huntingdon College Hawks (4-11, 2-5 USAS) as BC's senior and graduate class of Parker Corbett, Cooper, Jacob Gravely, Jacob Hernandez, Will Scoggins, Nate Stone were all honored in a pre game ceremony.
Corbett notched a hat trick of three goals in addition to eight ground balls and three caused turnovers to go alongside Cooper's career performance. Scoggins dished out two assists, with Hernandez also finding the back of the net and Brice Peterson and Stone notching assists. Logan Southern won eight faceoffs and Scott Bundy made 11 saves in goal for Brevard.
The Hawks were led by Kelcey Marston's seven-point effort that included a game-best five assists. Gage Kettlewell added a game-high five goals, while Connor Angst and Brady Moulton recorded three goals apiece. Tristan Dial won 19 faceoffs and grabbed a game-high 17 ground balls.
The visiting Hawks outshot Brevard 58-35 while BC's defense forced 23 Huntingdon turnovers. Huntingdon heavly controlled the ground ball battle 52-29 and won 20 of the game's 29 faceoff opportunities. The Hawks were also an unblemished 4-for-4 on extra-man opportunities.
Huntingdon scored four out of the game's five first goals to establish an early 4-1 edge, but Brevard answered back by outpacing the Hawks 4-3 in the second period to trim the deficit to two, 7-5. BC battled all the way back to tie things at five goals each before Huntingdon closed the first half with consecutive goals.
Huntingdon found the back of the net just over 30 seconds into the third quarter, and used a pair of power-play scores and a goal at the 11:50 mark to push its edge up to six goals, 11-5. BC found the net three-straight times to cut the deficit back down to a three-goal margin, 11-8, but a pair of last-minute goals in the third quarter kept Huntingdon up by five with 15 minutes left to play.
The Hawks wrapped up the win with four unanswered fourth quarter goals, as Huntingdon earned its second conference win of the season with a 17-8 triumph.
Brevard will host its final home regular season contest on Wednesday, April 24 at 6 p.m. vs. Piedmont before closing the 2024 season on the road next Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. at LaGrange.
