BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College softball team (6-27, 0-14 USA South) dropped both games of a USA South Conference doubleheader to N.C. Wesleyan (19-5, 9-5 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at the BC Softball Field. In between the two games, a Senior Day ceremony featured graduating seniors
Cassie Plemmons and
Grace Reynolds as well as graduate student Katelynn Olive.
GAME ONE – N.C. Wesleyan 13, Brevard 3 (5 Innings)
N.C. Wesleyan used a six-run fourth inning to propel the visitors to a run-rule victory in five innings. Brevard did score three runs in a productive second inning, yet was unable to score in any of the remaining frames.
Second baseman
Rylee Locklear hit a two-RBI double, while centerfielder
Karley Queen drew a bases-loaded RBI walk to lead the charge for the Tornados in the second inning. Trailing 6-0, third baseman
Peyton Wise drew a walk with one out to start the second-inning rally. Catcher
Olivia Martinez followed with a hit-by-pitch to reach base which was followed by a single by shortstop
Gabby Hooper to lead the bases. Queen then drew a walk to score Wise and load the bases once again. Locklear delivered with a double to left field scoring Hooper and Martinez and cutting the deficit in half.
After a scoreless third inning, the Battling Bishops recorded six runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to put away the victory.
Reynolds made the senior day start in the circle for the Tornados and went two innings. Freshman
Logan Masinsky pitched three innings in relief. Morgan Aycock was the winning pitcher for the Battling Bishops.
GAME TWO – N.C. Wesleyan 8, Brevard 0 (6 Innings)
NC Wesleyan held BC scoreless and used a big six-run second inning to propel the Battling Bishops to a run-rule victory in six innings in game two. NCWU added a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to clinch the win.
Brevard managed three hits in the contest with Locklear, first baseman
Regan Winkler and Olive each recording singles.
Masinsky started game two and went 1.2 innings for the Tornados. Reynolds came in to Masinsky and pitched the remaining 4.1 innings.
N.C. Wesleyan's Emily Humphrey earned the win after pitching six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and walking none.
Brevard will return to action with a road trip to Greensboro College on Wednesday. The home finale is set for Saturday, April 27 with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. vs. Pfeiffer at the BC Softball Field.
