Tornados Win Pair of Five-Setters on First Night of Bob Jones Invitational to Improve Win Streak to Four Matches

Marathon Matches Go BC’s Way on Friday Night

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College volleyball team (6-2) won a pair of five-set marathons on Friday night at the Bob Jones Invitational in Greenville, South Carolina.  The Tornados have now won four straight matches - the program's longest win streak since 2017 - with the last three wins all coming in five sets.  Brevard defeated Lancaster Bible (7-2) in BC's first match of the evening before knocking off Bob Jones (5-7) for the second time in four days.  BC improved to 4-0 on the season in five-set matches.

Brevard 3, Lancaster Bible 2

For the second straight match and the fourth time in 2024, the Tornados outlasted their opponent in five sets, taking down Lancaster Bible in neutral court action.  BC won the first set 25-23, before dropping sets two and three to fall behind 2-1.  In a must-win fourth set, the Tornados delivered with an impressive 25-18 victory to force the decisive final.  Brevard and Lancaster Bible battled in the fifth set with the Tornados winning by the score of 16-14 for the second consecutive match, having won by the same score in a win over Bob Jones on Tuesday at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

Freshman Casey Wampler recorded a career-high 15 kills to lead Brevard's attack.  Senior Ashley Hoxit delivered a season-high 13 kills, while senior Makenna Parkins added eight kills.  Freshman Izzy Boulay registered 41 assists to eclipse the 200-assist mark in just the seventh match of her collegiate career.

Defensively, junior Jaxson Tumicki recorded four blocks to go along with three blocks from both Hoxit and freshman Emma Fontana as the Tornados came up with a season-high 11 blocks as a team.   Senior libero Bailey Lance led Brevard with 22 digs, while Hoxit (13) and Boulay (10) each registered double-digit digs as well.

In the decisive fifth set, the Chargers jumped out to a 5-1 lead, forcing the Tornados to mount a comeback.  BC went on to win seven of the next eight points with five straight points coming during the service of sophomore Kylie Katcher.  With Brevard ahead 8-6, Lancaster Bible responded with three straight points to retake the lead.  After another scoring run by BC behind the service of Wampler, the two teams eventually found themselves tied 14-14.  A service error led to a match point for BC that resulted in the win on a service by Hoxit.

Brevard 3, Bob Jones 2

Bob Jones won the opening set 25-19, before Brevard answered with a 25-21 win in set two.  The Tornados rode momentum into the third set with a 25-23 victory to take a 2-1 advantage into the fourth stanza.

The fourth set was a thrilling affair with Brevard fighting off three set points until the Bruins managed a 28-26 win to force a fifth set. In the fifth set, the Tornados ran out to a 5-0 lead behind the service of Hoxit.  Following a kill by Wampler, BC stretched its lead even further, going ahead 9-1 on a service ace by Lance.  BC took the lead 14-6 before the Bruins staved off eight straight match points to tie the set 14-14.  BC put the match away with a block by Tumicki followed by the game winner coming with Boulay in the service position.  BC again won the fifth set by the score of 16-14, the third straight match where the fifth set ended in that identical score.

Wampler again led the BC attack with 15 kills, while Hoxit (12) and Parkins (11) came up big offensively as well.  Boulay registered 43 assists with Lance adding eight.  Wampler set a career-high in another category, this time with six service aces.  Hoxit and Lance each served three aces with Lili White recording her third ace of the year.  Tumicki led the defense at the net with three blocks, while Lance registered 22 digs.

Brevard returns to action Saturday with two more matches as part of the Bob Jones Tournament.  The Tornados are scheduled to play Clinton at 2 p.m. followed by a match against Toccoa Falls in neutral site action in Greenville, South Carolina.
