BREVARD, N.C. – With the Brevard College football team (0-1) leading by a score of 30-21 heading into the fourth quarter, the Hampden-Sydney College Tigers (1-1) used 30 unanswered fourth-quarter points to take a 51-30 victory on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Graduate wideout
Zackary Orr racked up 205-yard total on eight catches that included an 82-yard catch-and-run where be broke numerous Tiger tackle attempts. The total is the first time that a Tornado wideout has eclipsed the 200-yard threshold since Tyler Gregory turned in a 14-catch, 225-yard performance back in 2017 (NC Wesleyan, October 28). Graduate running back
Chancellor Lee-Parker picked up right where he left off last season, as the Auburn, Georgia native rushed for 66 yards and punched in three touchdown scores, setting a new personal single-game career-high for the third-year Tornado.

On the defensive side of the ball,
Robert Dorsey broke out with 10 tackles, two and ½ TFL, two sacks, and a forced fumble.

Reggie Taylor II notched an explosive play on special teams for Brevard with a 62-yard kickoff return.
Hampden-Sydney's offense scored the most points put up on the Tornados since a 2018 road defeat at Huntingdon (October 13, 52 points), with its up-tempo style proving difficult to contain. Carter Sido threw for four touchdown passes (19-for-27, 255 yards). Terry Hicks rushed for 130 yards on 24 carries (5.4 ypc) and scored twice, while Fain Barton dashed for 49 yards and a rushing score as well. Austin Fernandez paced the receiving unit for the Tigers with seven catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns. Ethan Dowdy added a pair of receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown, and Seth Lasso also logged a receiving TD for the HSC offense.
Brendan Wallace was HSC's breakout star on defense, totaling 11 tackles, four tackles-for-loss and three sacks to anchor the Tiger defense. Joseph Pierre added 10 tackles, while Robert Clarke recovered a fumble on the goal line that prevented a first-half Tornado scoring attempt. Kyle Lafayette added an interception, picking Beamish off on a deep ball down the far sideline.
The Tornados opened up the game with a seven-play, 79-yard drive that was capped off with a four-yard Lee-Parker touchdown rush, as BC took a 7-0 lead just four minutes into action. An eight-play, 66-yard drive by HSC followed to tie the contest up.
Hampden-Sydney scored on its next possession to take a 14-7 lead and a six-play, 98-yard drive by Brevard was spoiled when Beamish fumbled on a quarterback sneak, giving the ball back to the Tigers. However, Woods came through defensively for the Tornados with his pick-six, as the ballgame was tied up again 14-all. The Tigers attempted a lengthy 50-yard field goal just before halftime that went wide-right, leaving the contest all square at the break.
HSC scored on its first drive of the second half and forced a Tornado punt, but another big stand by the BC defense resulted in points after Dorsey forced a fumble on a sack that was recovered by the Tigers in the end zone, giving the Tornados a pair of points via the safety. The deficit was trimmed to a 21-16 margin with BC receiving the ball.
The BC offense orchestrated a six-play, 75-yard drive punctuated with Lee-Parker's second score of the afternoon – a three-yard touchdown run – putting the Tornado back on top 23-21. BC's defense forced a three-and-out by the Hampden-Sydney offense, and Lee-Parker found the end zone for the third time on Saturday afternoon shortly after. Brevard's margin was extended to a game-high nine points, 30-21, as the contest shifted to the fateful fourth quarter.
Sido connected with Fernandez for a 53-yard touchdown score on third down that shifted momentum the Tigers' way, as the visitors cut the deficit to two points. HSC forced a BC punt and capped a 10-play, 66-yard drive with a Hicks five-yard touchdown scamper – coupled with a successful two-point conversion – to retake the lead 36-30.
Another BC drive went backwards, and HSC capitalized once more with a seven-play, 47-yard drive that ended via Barton's 13-yard TD run, pushing the Tiger lead to two scores at 44-30. One last gasp for the Tornados was stuffed on downs, and Hampden-Sydney finalized its impressive comeback effort with a 42-yard touchdown run from Hicks, as the Tigers left Western North Carolina with a 21-point victory.
Total offense went narrowly in favor of HSC, 418-391, with the visitors out-rushing Brevard 163-97 while the Tornados held a 294-255 edge through the air. The Tigers were 3-for-3 on fourth-down conversions on Saturday, and went 4-for-4 on red zone scoring opportunities. The most glaring item from Saturday's box score was in the penalty category, as Brevard committed 13 infractions resulting in 121 penalty yards to benefit the HSC offense. Hampden-Sydney gained five first downs solely off Tornado penalties, and the Tigers only committed four infractions for 33 yards.
Brevard will look to bounce back next weekend at home when Belhaven University makes the trip to Ives-Lemel Family Field from Jackson, Mississippi. The Blazers and Tornados are scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 21.
