RALEIGH, N.C. - Catie Barton notched her second collegiate goal midway through the first half, but the Brevard College women's soccer team (4-0-2, 0-0-1 USA South) was unable to find a winner in the second half as the Tornados drew 1-1 to Meredith College (4-1-3, 0-0-1) USAS) in the USA South Conference opener on Saturday in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The result marks the fourth time out of four matches that Brevard vs. Meredith has ended in a draw. The two sides drew scoreless in the 2022 and 2023 regular seasons, and both teams played 110 scoreless minutes in the postseason last year before BC advanced on penalty kicks.
Barton found the back of the net in the 22nd minute off an assist from starting goalkeeper
Abby Nunez. After a foul in the Tornado attacking third, Nunez came up from her GK position and took the free kick, launching the ball into the left side of the box. Barton controlled the ball and nestled it into the right side of the goal, leveling the match.
Meredith struck first with an 11th-minute score by Kate Conoley, who found the back of the net directly off a corner kick.
Brevard led the shot total 18-9, including a 12-5 margin in the first half. Meredith took two more corners in the contest (5-3) than the Tornados, and each side was shown a yellow card.
Conoley led all Avenging Angels with four shot attempts, while
Mikayla Zvekan took five of BC's shots. Nunez made a pair of saves, and Meredith starting GK Khaliah Jones made four stops defensively.
The Tornados step out of conference play next Monday with a road trip to Toccoa, Georgia to face Toccoa Falls College, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
