Late Mozley Goals Lift Tornados Past Screaming Eagles on Monday Night

Mozley’s Second Multi-Goal Effort of Season Keeps Tornados Unbeaten

TOCCOA, Ga. - The Brevard College women's soccer team (5-0-2) kept its unbeaten streak going while getting back in the win column as the Tornados dropped Toccoa Falls College (4-2-2), 2-0 on Monday night in Toccoa, Georgia.

With the win, BC keeps its best start to a season in NCAA-era history alive, as the Tornados remain unbeaten through seven contests with five wins and two draws. Monday's brief reprieve from conference action also marked the end of a six-match road stretch for the Tornados, who will now look forward to a four-game homestand.

Kinlee Mozley, a freshman forward from Lexington, South Carolina, notched her second multi-goal performance of her young collegiate career, scoring twice in the final 15 minutes of play to break a scoreless tie and give the Tornados the victory. Catie Barton and Kaylin Prestosh notched assists on Mozley's goals, while the Tornados racked up 24 total shots in the match.

Nicole Arroyo (4-0) kept her third clean sheet of the season en route to her fourth win in four starts, as the Yulee, Florida product recorded saves on both of her chances. BC's defense stifled the Screaming Eagles, limiting the hosts to four shot attempts. Carien-Marie Benninghaus racked up seven saves to keep TFC in the match.

Brevard creates some chances through the first 10 minutes of action, taking four total shots and putting a couple of dangerous crosses into the box that were dealt with by the TFC defense. The Tornados then won the match's first three corner kicks within a span of five minutes, but each chance was turned away.

Brennan Howell subbed on in the 34th minute and created an immediate chance, nearly scoring off a pass from Hayley Kenney that was saved by the keeper. MK Smoak ripped a shot from distance that bounced off the crossbar on a free kick in the 36th minute, as the Tornados searched for the first goal of the contest late in the first half. However, the two sides would head to the intermission deadlocked in a scoreless tie.

The Tornados took 12 total shots in the first half, with three reaching the target, compared to TFC's two attempts and one on-target look. Mikayla Zvekan led the Tornados with four shots, while Howell and Mozley each had two looks apiece. BC held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks as well.

BC's first chance of the second half came in the 51st minute after a foul near the top of the penalty box. Arroyo ran up from her GK position to take the chance, but her shot was handled by Benninghaus.

After knocking on the door for several minutes in the second half, Brevard finally broke through in the 76th minute when Barton stole a Benninghaus pass and flicked the ball to a wide open Mozley, who collected it and finished off the best scoring chance of the night for the Tornados, who found themselves up 1-0 with under 14 left to play.

Mozley notched her multi-goal effort in the 88th minute, as Prestosh delivered a free kick into the left side of the box that the first-year Tornado placed into the back of the net, sealing up the 2-0 road win for Brevard.

USA South play picks back up for the Tornados on Saturday as Brevard returns home to take on William Peace in its first conference home match of 2024, set for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
