BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's soccer team (6-0-2, 1-0-1 USA South) continued its best-ever start to a season in the NCAA era with a resounding 7-0 triumph over Greensboro College (4-8, 1-2 USAS) on Wednesday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
The Tornados scored two first-half goals before breaking the match open with a five-goal onslaught in the second half. Brevard had two players record hat tricks in the match, marking the first time in BC's NCAA history that two players have notched hat tricks in the same match.
Junior midfielder Kiara Porcelli and junior forward Mikayla Zvekan recorded the 11th and 12th hat tricks in Brevard's NCAA era, as the duo accounted for six of BC's seven goals on Wednesday.
Zvekan added an assist for a seven-point performance, while fellow junior Olivia Guillermo turned in a career match with one goal and two assists. A bevy of Tornados distributed out assists in Wednesday's contest with Catie Barton, Austin Huffman, Kennedy Kelly, Hannah Mervine, Kinlee Mosley, Mikayla Rubin all being credited assists in the match. Abby Nunez (2-0-2) kept her second clean sheet of the season with three saves, and Mackenzie Lozano also worked in beteeen the sticks for the Tornados.
It was a thorough team win for Brevard, who dominated possession throughout the match. The Tornados held a 29-6 shot lead and took nine corner kicks to GC's one.
Porcelli began the scoring early for Brevard in the third minute, finishing off a give-and-go with Guillermo that resulted in a rocket off the junior's right foot that put BC up 1-0.
The Merrimack, New Hampshire midfielder doubled Brevard's lead in the 11th minute as Porcelli headed in Zvekan's cross to give the Tornados the early 2-0 edge.
Following the halftime intermission, Brevard was able to put in three goals in a span of just over three minutes. First, Guillermo headed home a buildup started by Kennedy, as Barton whipped in a fantastic cross into the penalty box. Then, following a handball by Greensboro, Porcelli capped her hat trick off with a spot kick goal. Finally, Guillermo began a buildup, finding Rubin in the midfield. The freshman immediately played the ball to Zvekan on the near side, and the junior scored the first of her three consecutive goals in the match as Brevard found itself quickly up 5-0.
Zvekan found the back of the net for a second time as she finished a buildup from Huffman and Mosley. The Draper, Utah forward finished off her hat trick performance as Mervine played her a through ball through the back line of the Pride's defense, and Zvekan finished the chance off once again as the Tornados cruised to the 7-0 victory.
Brevard is back at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. taking on Methodist University.
