BREVARD, N.C. - Freshman
Mikayla Rubin scored a game-winning goal in the 85th minute to give the Brevard College women's soccer team (7-0-2, 2-0-1 USA South) a dramatic 1-0 victory over visiting Methodist University (3-5, 2-1 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field. The win continued the best-start in school history for the Tornados, who remained undefeated through the first nine matches of 2024
Rubin, a native of Boynton Beach, Florida, cashed in on an assist by sophomore
Austin Huffman to propel BC into the lead after over 84 minutes of scoreless soccer between the two teams.
The Brevard defense then held off the Monarchs over the final five minutes of the contest to preserve the shutout and earn the key conference win.
It marked the sixth shutout of the season for the Tornados who limited Methodist to a mere three shots with just one shot allowed in the second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Abby Nunez played all 90 minutes to earn the shutout, while making one save. Nunez was also active on the offensive end, handling the majority of free kicks for BC with four shots taken and three shots-on-goal.
As a team, Brevard recorded 18 shots led by five shot attempts from forward
Mikayla Zvekan.
Olivia Guillermo and
Hayley Kenney each added two shots, while shots also were fired by
Kiara Porcelli,
Kennedy Kelly,
Brennan Howell, Rubin and Huffman.
Methodist goalkeeper Carolina Simpkins took the loss, despite recording eight saves.
Brevard returns to USA South Conference play with a road trip to Mary Baldwin University on Sunday, October 13 in Staunton, Virginia.
