Tornados Open USA South Play with Two Wins to Extend Win Streak to Eight

Best Start to Season in NCAA-Era Continues; Eight-Game Streak Matches a Program NCAA Record

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Brevard College volleyball team (10-2, 2-0 USAS) opened its USA South Conference schedule with two victories Saturday at a conference tri-match hosted by N.C. Wesleyan in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The Tornados began the day with a four-set victory over host N.C. Wesleyan (1-7, 0-2 USAS) followed by a thrilling five-set win over Southern Virginia (3-9, 0-1 USAS). 
 
With 10 wins through the first 12 games of the season, it marks the best start for Brevard in the NCAA-era of the program.  BC extended its win streak to eight games, matching the most consecutive victories in the NCAA-era of the program. BC's win over Southern Virginia also was the first in program D3 history vs. the Knights in five attempts.

Brevard won the first set 25-20 before the hosts found an equalizer with a 25-23 second-set win.  Tied 1-1, the Tornados were dominant in the match's final two sets with wins of 25-15 and 25-13
 
Senior Makenna Parkins recorded a team-high 12 kills, while freshman Casey Wampler delivered 11 kills.  Senior Ashley Hoxit added nine kills to go along with a match-high six service aces.
 
Freshman setter Izzy Boulay led all players with 30 assists as well as recording 13 digs on the defensive end.   Senior libero Bailey Lance registered a match-high 22 digs with Hoxit adding 12 digs of her own.
 
Lance, the school's all-time service ace leader, hit on three aces with Kylie Katcher and Boulay each adding two service aces.  Freshman Emma Fontana served an ace as well, as the team registered 14 service aces in total.
 
Brevard 3, Southern Virginia 2
 
The Tornados won the first set again, this time with authoritative 25-13 result.  The Knights however answered with wins in both the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead and put the Tornados in a must-win scenario.
 
BC came up big in the fourth set, capped off by a clutch service ace by Hoxit followed by a Parkins' kill to force a fifth set.
 
The final set was a thriller as SVU took a 14-10 lead, setting up four consecutive match point opportunities.  After a service error gave BC the serve back, Boulay delivered on her service with an assist to Parkins.  The freshman from Newnan, Georgia then provided back-to-back aces to tie the match 14-14.  Another point came on Boulay's service, creating a match-point scenario for the Tornados.  BC delivered as Boulay set up Hoxit for a match-winning kill as the Tornados won the decisive fifth set with six consecutive points.
 
Parkins and Wampler again led the BC attack each with ten kills.  Parkins has recorded double-digit kills in five straight matches, while Wampler now has double-digit kills in five of her last six matches played.
 
Boulay tallied 28 assists, two aces and 15 digs, while Lance registered 24 digs and three service aces.  Fontana served three aces and Hoxit registered two more aces to bring her total to eight aces for the day.
 
Brevard returns to USA South action with a home match vs. Salem on Tuesday evening.  First serve is set for 6 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
