BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men's basketball team (5-7, 1-2 USAS) captured its first conference win of the 2024-25 season with a solid 85-70 win over USA South Conference foe Methodist (6-6, 1-2 USAS) early Friday afternoon at the Boshamer Gymnasium. Brevard took control of the contest in the second half en route to the victory that featured four Tornados scoring in double figures.
Senior
KK Horton recorded a tremendous all-around game ending up just two rebounds shy of a triple-double. Horton registered an NCAA D3-era school record ten assists to go along with 13 points and eight boards. Horton's 10 assists tied Darin Dellinger (2009) and Josh Roper (2011) for second on BC's single-game assists lists in the school's NCAA-era.
Junior
Jadon Carnes was Brevard's leading scorer with 15 points, while senior
Charlie Hester scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.
Freshman
Twain Wilson, a three-time USA South Rookie of the Week performer this season, made his first career start and delivered 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting with two 3-pointers. Wilson also pulled down six rebounds in a career-high 26 minutes played.
Methodist was led by senior Zac Sledge with 21 points and seven rebounds. Ke Edwards added 13 points and seven rebounds.
The two teams played evenly throughout the majority of the first half with Brevard taking a 37-36 edge into the halftime locker room.
Beginning three minutes into the second half, an electric 8-0 run by the Tornados changed the tone of the game. The run started with a jumper by Wilson that preceded a stretch of three straight fast-break finishes. After a Methodist miss, Hester pulled down a rebound then found Horton who set up Carnes for a layup. Another Monarch miss followed which resulted in a rebound by Horton who delivered an outlet pass to Hester. In full attack mode and with a defender between Hester and the basket, the native of Huntersville, North Carolina delivered a "poster" dunk that sent shockwaves through the building. The run concluded with a sensational fast-break layup by Wilson, off an assist by guard
Charles Reed.
Methodist cut the deficit to 53-45 at the 15:09 mark, however the Tornados responded with five straight points by Wilson. BC continued to keep the Monarchs in check the rest of the way, never relinquishing a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
Brevard shot 61% for the game, making nine 3-pointers. Methodist was held to 46% shooting from the field and blanked from behind the arc, going 0-for-11 in 3-pointers. The Monarchs did win the rebounding battle, including a 14-4 advantage on the offensive glass.
The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but instead played on Friday due to winter weather conditions in the area. Next up for Brevard is another USA South home game on Sunday as the Tornados host N.C. Wesleyan at 2 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
