BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Brevard College men's basketball team (8-8, 3-4 USAS) fell 76-66 to host Southern Virginia (15-3, 6-1 USAS) in USA South Conference competition on Saturday afternoon at Knight Arena in Buena Vista, Virginia. With the win, Southern Virginia remained in first place in the 2024-25 USA South men's basketball standings, while the Tornados currently sit in the fifth spot.
For the second straight game, freshman
Twain Wilson led the Tornados in scoring, this time with 12 points. It marked the ninth time this season and fifth time in the last six outings that Wilson has scored in double figures. Junior
Jadon Carnes recorded a game-high eight assists to go along with 11 points and four rebounds. Senior
Charlie Hester also scored in double figures with 10 points on the afternoon.
Graduate student
Charles Reed led BC on the boards with five rebounds while also dishing out three assists. Freshman
Justen Goudelock delivered with seven points and four rebounds, while junior
Dre'Shaun Brown also pulled down four boards to go along with six points.
Southern Virginia's Eli Balistaedt registered 28 points, nine rebounds and four steals to lead the winning effort. Christian Goode scored 18 points and Tyler Kartchner registered 10 points to further pace SVU's attack.
Brevard College opened the scoring on a jumper by Wilson, then took the lead 9-8 again on a layup by Carnes. The Tornados soon went on a 10-1 scoring run capped off by a 3-pointer by sophomore
Brock McKnight to stake a 19-13 lead with 7:31 to play in the first half. The Knights came back to even the score minutes after and the two teams went back-and-forth before heading into halftime tied 33-33.
After a SVU bucket to start the second half, Wilson hit a 3-pointer to put the Tornados back ahead early in the stanza. Southern Virginia would take the lead again minutes later and remain ahead for the rest of the contest. BC would keep the deficit in single digits most of the way, however the Knights would pull away in the game's final minutes to secure the home conference victory.
Southern Virginia outshot the Tornados 48% to 38% in the contest. BC went 9-of-31 from beyond the arc compared to 6-of-21 for the Knights. SVU outrebounded BC 35 to 27 and made five more free throws than the Nados.
Brevard returns to action this Wednesday with more USA South Conference action as the Tornados host Greensboro. Tip off time is set for 5:30 p.m. as part of a men's and women's doubleheader at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
