BC Women’s Basketball Outlasts Warren Wilson on Friday Night

Tornados Finish Game on 17-2 Run, Johnson Scores Career-High 23

SWANNANOA, N.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (2-0) pulled away late for a 76-63 road win over local foe Warren Wilson (0-3), 76-63 on Friday evening at the Devries Athletic Gymnasium. 

Trailing by two points, 61-59, with just under three minutes left to play, the Tornados closed the contest out with a 17-2 spurt to seal the victory. Brevard outscored Warren Wilson by 17 points in the second half of play, 43-26. 

Kayden Johnson, a second-year forward from Statesville, N.C., followed up her impressive season opener with a career-high 23 points with eight made field goals and seven made free throws while also grabbing seven boards. Jada Perry-Wilkins totaled 18 points with a team-best four made 3-pointers, while Christena Rhone also scored in double figures with 13. Olivia Miller led the charge on the glass for Brevard, controlling 10 rebounds, while Aleysha Hill scored nine points and distributed a team-best six assists.

Tatyana Lewis led four Owls in double figures with 19 points, six rebounds, and an impressive seven steals defensively. 

Brevard won the battle on the glass, 39-30, while both teams shot 37% from the field. The game was back and forth throughout the night, with seven ties and 14 lead changes. BC's bench propelled the Tornados to victory with 36 points compared to just two for the Owls. Warren Wilson was able to turn 18 Brevard turnovers into 22 points. 

WWC's defense held Brevard to just 18% shooting from the field in the first period and took a four-point edge, 16-12, at the end of the stanza. Each side scored 21 point and shot the ball over 40% in the second quarter as the Owls took a 37-33 lead into the intermission. 

BC flipped the script in the third period, stifling the Owls to just two made field goals and 13% from the field as Brevard outpaced WWC by six to take a two-point lead, 51-49. 

Warren Wilson went up by as many as four points and held a 61-59 lead with just under three minutes left to play. Petty-Wilkins finished off an and-one layup, followed by a 3-pointer by Hill as BC went up by four. 

Petty-Wilkins then connected with a 3-pointer at the top of the key, followed by a pair of Miller free throws as Brevard took control of the contest for good and closed out the 13-point victory. 

The Tornados hit the road one more time on Monday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. to face Guilford in Greensboro, N.C., before their home-opener on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. vs. Johnson and Wales-NC at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
