BREVARD, N.C. - Brevard College sophomore guard
Twain Wilson returned in a big way with a career-high 27 points as BC men's basketball (2-3) held off Warren Wilson (2-4), 86-84, on Monday night at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
Wilson, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, returned to the lineup for the first time since the season opener and made an immediate impact with 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from long distance. The second-year Tornado added five rebounds and six made free throws as well.
KK Horton added 17 points with five rebounds and three made 3-pointers, while
Jadon Carnes scored 12 points, grabbed a team-best six rebounds, and distributed a game-high six assists while going 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
Malachi McLean rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points in 11 minutes.
Tajh Williams played all 40 minutes for the Owls, pacing the Owls with an impressive 30-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Warren Wilson was able to narrowly outshoot Brevard from the field, 53% to 49%, but BC's 12-8 edge from beyond the arc made an important difference. Brevard made 20 total free throws and recorded 18 assists on 27 field goals.
The Owls scored the first seven points of the first half and kept the Tornados at arms-length for a majority of the period. Trailing by six with 2:33 left in the first half, the Tornados went on a 8-1 scoring run capped by a layup from
Brock McKnight to take a one-point halftime edge, 45-44.
BC picked up where it left off, starting the first half on a 10-0 run in the first three minutes of the second half. Brevard was able to keep the Owls behind by double digits through over half of the second period, but an 18-6 Warren Wilson run put the Owls back on top, 78-77, with 3:41 to go.
Warren Wilson held a narrow 81-79 lead with 2:46 to play, but the Tornados scored the next four points with a pair of Wilson free throws and a Horton layup to retake the lead, 83-81, at the 1:20 mark. Down the stretch, Carnes hit a pair of crucial free throws, and Horton added one with three seconds left as the Tornados denied the Owls an opportunity at a game winner at the end to complete the exciting home win, 86-84.
Brevard returns to play following the Thanksgiving holiday with a trip to Demorest, Ga. to face Piedmont on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
